“Squid Game” is Netflix’s most popular series, attracting 111 million views in less than 4 weeks after its launch in 2021. Not only does the content attract audiences, the series also wins a series of awards. large and small, highly appreciated by experts for its quality.
The success of the film made the producers decide to make a sequel. Although the expected broadcast date is not until 2024, fans are still eagerly waiting for information about the new film.
Here’s everything we need to know about the upcoming second season of “Squid Game.”
Main character Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) will appear in part two
Part one ended surprisingly, leaving many questions for the audience. The most important question concerns main character Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae). After winning the death contest at the cost of his friend Cho Sang-woo’s life, Gi-hun falls into depression. He then discovers that the organizer of the contest is one of the competitors he befriended, Oh Il-nam (Hideo Kimura).
In a statement shared by Netflix in June 2022, “Squid Game” Creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk confirmed that Gi-hun will return for a second season.
While the extent of his role in the second season remains unclear, he will likely have to fight against those in charge of the competition.
In August 2022, Hwang told The Hollywood Reporter that season two will focus on Gi-hun’s changes compared to the end of the first season.
“Instead of trying to meet viewers’ expectations, I just thought about the last moment when Gi-hun refused to get on the plane and I thought about what he would do next,” Hwang said.
He continued, “I can’t share any details yet, but you know that Seong Gi-hun became a completely new person at the end of season one, so season two will be about what Gi- new hun will take place. what to do and how things will play out with this new type of character”.
At least one of the villains from the first season will also return
The author’s statement also confirmed that Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) will return in the second part, and that “the man in the suit with ddakji” (played by “Train to Busan” star Gong Yoo) will also appear. can appear.
Both characters are villains who belong to a secret organization that runs a deadly rivalry.
“The man in the suit with Ddakji” refers to Gong Yoo’s unnamed character who only appears in the premiere and finale of the film. He is the one who recruits the players and plays a Korean paper game, Ddakji, with potential opponents before engaging them in competition.
Much of season one follows undercover cop Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon), who secretly enters the game to find his missing brother who previously participated. However, in episode 8, Jun-Ho discovers that his brother is now the Game Leader. Front Man appears to shoot Jun-Ho dead before he can expose the group’s activities.
But we never see Jun-Ho’s body, which means the character could return in season two to try to save his brother. Wi, the actor who plays Jun-Ho, told Deadline in 2021 that he also wanted his character to come out alive.
“I can’t wait to know what happened to him. I wanted him to come back alive, find his brother and ask him a lot of questions. As an older brother, I will ask him sincerely. As a police officer, I also want to discover all the secrets behind the game. I really hope to meet him. Jun-ho comes back alive and explores all these questions. I hope to see a more brotherly side to their relationship,” Wi said.
12 new actors will be players in the second part of the game
In June 2023, Netflix made several announcements about the upcoming second season of “Squid Game” during their TUDUM global fan event.
They revealed that Hwang Jun-ho (Wi) will return in season two, although they did not confirm whether the character is alive or only appearing in flashbacks.
Additionally, the streamer announced 12 new actors who will play players in “Squid Game” season two. The new cast includes Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Park Sung-hoon, Jo Yu-ri, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-uk, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won and Won Ji-an.
Gyu-young, Sung-hoon and Lee previously starred in two other popular Netflix Korean dramas, Sweet Home and The Glory. Netflix also confirmed that the cast has had their first script reading and production will begin in 2023.
Scary killer doll has a boyfriend
“Squid Game” creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk didn’t reveal much about the second season’s plot in the Netflix statement announcing the renewal, but he did write: “You will also be introduced to Young’s boyfriend -hee, Cheol-su”.
Young-hee is the name of the scary giant robot doll, based on a real statue, used in the game “Red Light, Green Light” in episode one. During the game, the doll would spin at certain times to chase the contestants out – and if they moved, they would be shot dead.
According to Koreaboo, Young-hee and Cheol-su are famous characters in old Korean textbooks, often depicted as close friends.
This could mean the series will get a new deadly game involving another giant, scary doll.
Other actors from season one may reprise their roles in season two
In March 2022, Hwang also teased that “Squid Game” star Jung Ho-yeon could return in season two.
Jung plays Kang Sae-byeok, a North Korean defector who participates in a deadly competition for enough money to reunite his family. The character died in episode 8 after being killed by Sang-woo right before the final match of the competition.
Hwang told Deadline on the PGA Awards red carpet that he would “try something” to bring back the actors playing dead characters. He gestured to Jung: “Let’s just say maybe she has a twin sister.”
Jung laughed and replied, “I can change my hair color. Let’s have a little plastic surgery.”
Kang Sae-byeok was Jung’s first acting role, but she quickly became a fan favorite and even won a SAG Award for her performance on the show.
Jung told The Hollywood Reporter in December 2021 that she lost nearly 3kg in the week after the film’s release because she struggled to understand the film’s success.
Part two may not be the end of the story
The “Squid Game” creator told Korea Times in December 2021 that he was also in talks with Netflix about the show’s third season.
Netflix hasn’t confirmed a third season, but season two could be left open to make space for more stories.
