The mesmerizing world of manga has gradually won the hearts of residents of Guwahati, Assam, as the popularity of Japanese anime or cartoons continues to soar. Guwahati Plus recently shed light on this growing phenomenon, tracing the growing interest in Japanese comics since the time Animax appeared on Indian television screens.
The “manga fever” that ensued saw anime enthusiasts looking to extend their animation adventures by delving into manga volumes, a trend that has since sparked demand worth telling about these illustrative stories.
Among the most popular manga genres in Guwahati are shounen and shoujo. Shounen manga, aimed specifically at boys, often feature action-packed stories, while shoujo manga, designed for girls, often explores themes of romance and everyday life.
Some of the prominent manga titles attracting Guwahati readers include Naruto, Haikyuu, Demon Slayer, My Hero AcadeKaren, Bleach and Spy x Family. However, the fan favorite seems to be Attack on Titan, despite the surprising absence of an official streaming platform for the series in India.

The Assam Book Fair held in December 2022 further proved the manga phenomenon, with thousands of manga copies selling off the shelves in just ten days.
The thriving manga community in Guwahati continues to expand, nurturing clubs and communities like the Assam Senpai Society, where fans unite to exchange suggestions, dissect the latest chapters, and indulge in cosplay like the their beloved characters. The city has also hosted screenings from the Japan Film Festival and hosts many conferences, competitions and events dedicated to this popular hobby.
