Although a great moment, how Frieza unlocked his Black form in Super Dragon Ball feels completely random and even lazy to write. However, the series actually perfectly foreshadowed this to happen in an earlier story when Goku underwent special training with the Galactic Patrolman Merus.
Black Frieza first appeared in Dragon Ball Super chapter 86 by author Akira Toriyama and artist Toyotarou. When introducing his new form to a shocked Goku and Vegeta, the villain explains that he has stumbled across the Room of Spirit and Time on one of the planets he has conquered and is trying to complete it. into 10 years of intense training there. At the time, this seemed like a stretch as it was assumed that Dragon Ball had only one Chamber of Spirit and Time under Kami’s supervision. However, this is actually not the case according to the previous Dragon Ball Super chapter.
Dragon Ball Super shows another room of spirit and time
When Planet Eater Moro was still ravaging the galaxy in Galactic Patrol Prisoner Story, Goku enlisted the help of Galactic Patrolman Merus to teach him how to master Super Instinct. Eventually, Merus moves their training to the Chamber of Spirit and Time located in a pyramid-like structure on a completely separate planet other than Earth in chapter 52. There, Goku learns that a days in this special Room of Spirit and Time equals three days of real-world training, as opposed to Kami’s, where a year of training can be completed in one day.
While not as powerful, Merus’ chamber still proves that there is more than one chamber in the galaxy. So it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary if Frieza could find and train others out there, which he obviously did. Furthermore, the fact that Merus’ room was much weaker than the one Kami was monitoring meant that there could be a room strong enough to achieve the equivalent of 10 years of training like Frieza. However, the question remains who built Merus’s room, especially since it’s on an uninhabited planet, as well as who built the room that Frieza trained for 10 years.
Frieza’s new Dragon Ball meta form isn’t lazy writing
While some fans may still have trouble understanding that Frieza just went through a huge amount of training to unlock another transformation, they can at least now get the idea that it performed in the Room of Spirit and Time. After all, it’s easy to accept complex plot twists like these when they’re introduced or alluded to earlier in a completely unrelated plot. That’s because they don’t feel like random add-ons or last-minute additions to justify a different story. Instead, they feel much more purposeful and capable, and that’s the thing Super Dragon Ball made by introducing Meerus’s Chamber of Spirit and Time in the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Story long before Black Frieza’s debut at the end of Granolah The Survivor Saga.
