Only a year has passed since the anime Frieren: Beyond Journey's End premiered on September 29, 2024, and today we're celebrating its 1-year anniversary with some of our favorite characters from the first season . The anime is holding a special event on Saturday where every fan is hoping for the same, but for now, let's see who we want to see again. The intention is to present the top 20 characters in no particular order and this list will not be ranked.
1 year anniversary of Frieren: Beyond Journey's ending anime – Top 20 characters
Frireren: Beyond Journey's End Celebrating 1 Year Anime – Our Top 20 Characters
Frieren
Who else to start with but the titular Frieren. The extremely powerful yet approachable mage defeated the Demon King as part of the Hero Party and is now on a quest with Fern and Stark to reach Ende. She has learned to respect the passage of time and developed considerable character through her new group and we can't wait to see more of her.
Actress who voiced Frieren in the anime:
Japanese: Atsumi TanezakiEnglish: Mallorie Rodak
Himmel
Long gone but never forgotten, Hero Himmel will surely make more appearances as Frieren continues his journey. We've seen the ways he tries to ensure Frieren will have a better life after he passes away, and the synonym for perfection is certainly his name.
Himmel's voice actors in the anime:
Japanese: Nobuhiko OkamotoEnglish: Clifford Chapin
Fern
Frieren's prodigy student, who was even invited as a mentor by the Grand Mage from the Age of Myth, Serie. Fern was voted Best Girl of the Fall 2023 anime season ahead of her master, and her relationship with Stark will no doubt continue to make us all think of Sein when he hits the table .
Actress voicing Fern in the anime:
Japanese: Kana IchinoseEnglish: Jill Harris
Stark
Cowardly but extremely strong warrior, student of Warrior Eisen. He may like to sleep and do nothing, but when the going gets tough, no one is more trustworthy than him. His density probably won't improve quickly, but his willingness to learn (and not make Fern angry) is what makes us look forward to seeing more of his development .
Stark's voice actors in the anime:
Japanese: Chiaki KobayashiEnglish: Jordan Dash Cruz, Brittney Karbowski (Young)
Heiter
The drunken priest of the Hero Party, Heiter the Priest. We must thank him for taking care of Fern and giving her to Frieren, and he contributed to defeating the Demon King. There's probably more to learn about his past with both Frieren and Fern, so maybe we'll see him again.
Heiter's voice actor in the anime:
Japanese: Hiroki TochiEnglish: Jason Douglas
Eisen
Just as Heiter did for Fern, Eisen did for Stark. The warrior Eisen also helped defeat the Demon King (although he and Himmel were almost executed before they could depart), and he trained the new generation as best he could. The way he handles fear in the face of adversity is admirable, and his teachings will certainly help Stark in the future.
Eisen's voice actors in the anime:
Japanese: Yoji UedaEnglish: Christopher Guerrero
Flamme
The Great Mage Flamme, Frieren's master and one of the most powerful human mages in history. She paved the way for Frieren and taught her everything she could, from the importance of mana concealment to her favorite spell of creating flowers.
Flamme's voice actress in the anime:
Japanese: Atsuko Tanaka*English: Lydia Mackay
*Atsuko Tanaka passed away on August 20 this year after a year-long battle against an undisclosed illness.
Series
The living grimoire and head of the Continental Magic Association. Although largely uncaring and cold, we learn that her intuition is never wrong and she does not miss the potential of young magicians. She's only just been introduced but there's certainly a lot more to learn about this experienced elf.
Female voice actresses for the series in the anime:
Japanese: Mariya IseEnglish: Anastasia Muñoz
Seine
While he is an amazing priest, Sein just got so upset with Fern and Stark not starting to date that he left the group. Wait, that's not exactly what happened. He goes looking for his childhood friend Gorilla. Whatever the case, Sein will definitely reappear at some point and he's a character we can't wait to see.
Sein's voice actors in the anime:
Japanese: Yuichi NakamuraEnglish: Christopher Wehkamp
Denken
The old magician was not afraid to fight. Denken is another interesting character who seems to understand similar things to Frieren despite being a human with a short lifespan. Having tragically lost his wife despite his efforts to save her, he took the first-class Mage Exam so he could return to his homeland. He has no children, but he likes to spoil young magicians.
Denken's voice actors in the anime:
Japanese: Jiro SaitoEnglish: Ben Phillips
Wirbel
Not fond of killing but not afraid to do so when necessary, Wirbel is another interesting mage we met during the First Class Mage Exam. He is accustomed to war and cares deeply for his allies, acting like a tsundere to Ehre and Scharf when they are on the same team.
Wirbel's voice actors in the anime:
Japanese: Kisho TaniyamaEnglish: Ricco Fajardo, Meg McClain (young)
Übel
The most chaotic character we have ever met, Übel is still loved by many. She can be cold and brutal, but she also likes to tease people she finds interesting, such as Land. She is a genius magician and her ability to use the magic of people she can empathize with helps her grow a lot.
Übel's voice actress in the anime:
Japanese: Ikumi Hasegawa English: Morgan Berry
Land
Another mystery, only Serie realized that he had never left his hometown during the First Class Mage Exam. While Übel seems to think he is warming up to her, Land can also be completely detached and disinterested, and we are left in the dark about his true motives and powers.
Land's voice actors in the anime:
Japanese: Shohei KomatsuEnglish: Corey Wilder
Methode
Also mysterious, but Methode took care of Fern's clone easily. She likes cute things, even thinking of Serie when she first saw the elf. Now also a first-class magician, we look forward to seeing her again in the future.
Methode's voice actress in the anime:
Japanese: Reina UedaEnglish: Caitlin Glass
Kanne
Kanne is a young mage who failed the first-class Mage Exam, but there is no doubt that she has a lot of potential to grow. We saw what she could do against Richter when she fought his team alongside Frieren and Lawine, and the water specialist is a mage to watch out for.
Actresses who voiced Kanne in the anime:
Japanese: Azumi WakiEnglish: Madeleine Morris
Lawine
Like Kanne, Lawine is also just getting started. She's an ice magic user and she can definitely develop further as she continues to train (and continue to fight) with her childhood friend. It will be interesting to see if and how they factor into the future of the story.
Actresses who voiced Lawine in the anime:
Japanese: Sayumi SuzushiroEnglish: Rebecca Danae
Richter
One of the magicians who probably deserved to pass the exam, Richter was unlucky and still failed in the end. The magic shop owner has shown that he is not as cold and cruel as he first appeared, even helping Frieren by repairing Fern's staff. Hope he can pass the exam and we will see more of him in the future.
Richter's voice actor in the anime:
Japanese: Eiji HanawaEnglish: Ian Mead Moore
Laufen
Denken's unofficial and unrelated niece, Laufen is another promising mage who is a bit too fast to try to become a first-rate mage. She has good skills but is also afraid of Serie's mana and can't overcome it. Regardless, the kind, donut-loving young magician still has a lot of room to grow, and hopefully we'll learn more about her in the future.
Laufen's voice actresses in the anime:
Japanese: Shizuka IshigamiEnglish: Marisa Duran
Sense
The curious proctor of stage 2 of the First Class Mage Exam, Sense is also very interesting. She didn't say much, but she seemed kind in her own way and she did what she could to make her exam fair and (sort of) passable. The magic with her hair is also quite unique and hopefully we get to see her seriously fight off a demon at some point.
Actresses who voiced Sense in the anime:
Japanese: Haruka TeruiEnglish: Lindsay Seidel
Ehre
Quite possibly the one with the fewest fans on this list, Ehre has yet to reach his full potential. Fern rates her as the strongest of the group that includes Wirbel and Scharf, and she is also the niece of Lernen, currently probably the strongest human mage alive (and the student of Serie who faced off against Frieren ).
Ehre's voice actress in the anime:
Japanese: Kanae Ito English: Trina Nishimura
Additional features: Aura the Guillotine
As a bonus to our Frieren: Beyond Journey's End 1st anniversary anime character list, we have to introduce Aura the Guillotine. The overconfident demon had to finish off Frieren early in the story, but she was still voted 2nd in the official character popularity poll (to the surprise of Ayana Taketatsu). Her story in the main anime is definitely over, but that doesn't mean we can never see her again (in some kind of side story or side story, for example).
Aura's voice actress in the anime:
Japanese: Ayana TaketatsuEnglish: Corey Pettit
And those are the favorite characters in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End on the occasion of the anime's 1st anniversary. The anime was animated by MADHOUSE and aired in 28 episodes from September 29, 2024. The anime was voted the Best Anime of Fall 2023, and also won the awards for Most Beautiful Boy (Stark), Most Beautiful Girl (Fern ), Best Adaptation, Best Drama, and Best Opening Award (“Yuusha” by YOASOBI).
In our 2023 Anime of the Year Awards, Frieren won Best New Anime, Best Adaptation, Best Fantasy, Best Adventure and placed 2nd in the Best Drama category and 3rd in Best Animation category. Then in the Winter 2024 anime rankings, part 2 of the anime also performed well. The film won five awards and finished second in multiple categories behind Bokuyaba, which swept the weekly ratings that season.
Once again, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End will celebrate the anime's first anniversary this Saturday, while you can rewatch the anime to see featured characters again on Crunchyroll.
