Fairy Tail: 100 Year Quest 04
フェアリーテイル 100年クエスト
Summary/SPOILER Summary:
Jellal confronts Touka, who claims not to know what a White Mage is. As Jellal gives his reason for the confrontation, Laxus intervenes, citing her membership in Fairy Tail. Jellal backs down and takes a room at the hotel to contemplate the situation. Meanwhile on the Diabolos, Kiria leads Erza around by making her crawl like a dog, with a leash attached. Kiria takes Erza to the ship's hold to visit Wendy and a seasick Naruto.
Elsewhere, Lucy is at sea in a shabby state with Happy and Charle (Carla). A larger, more luxurious self-propelled small boat carries the mage Brandish. She carries a miniature Grey with her. Brandish updates Lucy on the events that have happened to her country and her former guildmates since their fight. She agrees to be Lucy's friend, but also informs Lucy that the key to Aquarius is in Guiltina and she intends to retrieve it.
Back on the Diabolos, Erza breaks free from Kiria's hypnosis. Enraged at what happened to her, Erza frees Wendy and Nat. Brandish floats by and expands a rock on the seabed, causing the ship to run aground. This causes Wendy and Naruto to recover. Kiria awakens and fights Erza again. Meanwhile, Wendy stops Skullion with her Wind Dragon magic. Naruto destroys Madmole's armor with heat.
Back at Fairy Tail, the guild discusses Touka's situation with her gift. Gajeel notices that Touka's tearful display of innocence has a sinister smile on her face. Laxus encourages her to be honest with the guild. Touka leaves and goes to confront Jellal. She decides to eliminate Jellal for her mission. However, the White Mage personality is cut off by Touka's personality. Gajeel and his teammates arrive to subdue Touka.
Thoughts/Reviews:
One thing I'll give to Mashima-sensei — every now and then, he'll add a surprising twist to the story to give it an interesting edge. And that's the case with Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest 04.
An interesting twist
Based on my review of the previous episode, I felt like Jellal's confrontation with Touka had two outcomes. Either Touka denies everything, or she defeats Jellal in battle. At first, option 1 seemed plausible, thanks in part to Laxus' intervention. Then we get more innocent actions in Fairy Tail. But then she leaves and option 2 kicks in. And despite all his warnings, Touka catches Jellal off guard and nearly kills him.
Surprisingly, Touka stopped herself. Yes, it was a bit of a plot twist in an episode full of them. However, the idea of an innocent girl named Touka being possessed by this powerful “White Mage” is interesting. She used to have a tail, so I suppose Touka could actually be one of the Exceed cats. Charle/Carla takes on the form of a human girl, albeit younger in appearance.
I can't imagine that this White Mage individual can be suppressed for long anyway. After all, it's been a while since Touka has been doing this. So it might be worth all the effort to stop the White Mage. And then what happens to Fairy Tail?
The Long Lore
I am glad about that in Fairy Tail: 100 Year Quest 04
strong>, we get a retelling of who Brandish is. Even though I own all 63 volumes of the manga, I've stopped rewatching them because the manga is getting boring. So I don't really remember the character of Brandish. The episode doesn't get too deep into the weeds, but I get enough information to know that Brandish is a powerful foe that Fairy Tail has had to deal with. And we get a reminder of her power.
Another thing this episode told me was why Lucy didn't summon Aquarius in the recent battle. I had no idea, despite reading and rewatching Fairy Tail Volume 45. So now I know what happened to Aquarius. And the episode introduced a side quest for Lucy to get Aquarius back. What I didn't know, however, was why Brandish wanted Aquarius. After all, Brandish isn't a Celestial Spirit Mage. I guess if I reread the manga, I'll get the whole story. Alas, I don't have that much time.
Change in plot
Oh man, there are some serious plot twists in this. Fairy Tail: 100 Year Quest 04. I mentioned Touka being possessed, but that works. However, Brandish just showing up in the middle of the ocean to confront Lucy is a huge plot twist. Team Naruto was easily defeated before. So Brandish showing up will help the story stop the Diabolos ship, thus allowing Natsu and Wendy to recover. And it introduces a new side quest for Aquarius.
The next option is to free Erza's magic from Kiria's control. I don't remember if Erza had this power before, she could “half” control someone's spirit. However, after Erza was humiliated further, she had to fight Kiria again. And then when Kiria broke Erza's sword, Erza now had an energy sword, thanks to Wendy. 😂
The rematch between Naruto and Madmole plays out like a different plot. Before, Madmole picked her nose and Nat couldn’t do anything about it. Now, Nat can suddenly overcome everything because of “hot fire”. In terms of conflict, it’s not the worst, but it’s still there.
Final thoughts and conclusions
Let me summarize my review of Fairy Tail: 100 Year Quest 04 with some final thoughts.
Erza's humiliation at the hands of Kiria is treated as a cringe-inducing sexual act. It's as if Mashima-sensei (or whoever) thought, “You know, a submissive, Erza being led around like a dog and used as a chair is hot. Let's put that in the story stat!” 😑 Also, sexually, Gray returns to normal size and the art makes sure to depict it as Lucy being “pounded”. 🙄 I was completely wrong about Mercphobia. Not sure why he's unconscious, considering his power. Why didn't Diabolos kill/eat Natsu and Wendy? I should have put that in the plot.
Final, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest 04 turned out to be a fun episode and that was something I didn't expect. But it had some creepy, creepy content.
