Cyberpunk 2077 game developer and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners animated series producer CD Projekt has confirmed plans to make more animated projects set in the Cyberpunk universe.
According to IGN, CD Projekt Red (CDPR) held an earnings call on August 28, when asked about building its pop culture portfolio and a possible sequel to the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime, which the company co-produced with Studio Trigger. “Yes, of course we are planning to put more things into the pop culture wheel. It’s very much in our interests,” CEO Michał Nowakowski said. “When it comes specifically to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners getting a sequel, I want to reiterate what I said earlier, which is, ‘We are definitely planning to do more on the animation side with Cyberpunk, so I hope that’s enough of an answer. So expect to see more, but that’s all I can say right now.”
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Producer Reveals New Planned Animation Project
CDPR declined to comment specifically on Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2, giving a similar answer to Satoru Honma, the head of CDPR in Japan, on the subject in 2022. Via Famitsu, he revealed how the idea for the series came about, with an introduction from CDPR's former business development director, Rafal Jaki. Jaki is the showrunner for Edgerunners and is currently the author of NO/NAME — the first manga series written by an all-foreign team to be serialized on Jump+. Edgerunners is only planned as a standalone work, with Honma stating, “So there's no 'We're actually working on Season 2 behind the scenes right now.' Even if we were to make an anime in the future, I don't know if it would be Season 2 or a completely different work.”
There is, however, a story that takes place immediately after the events of Edgerunners, but through the form of Mike Pondsworth's original Cyberpunk tabletop game, which the games and anime later took inspiration from. Edgerunners director and Studio Trigger co-founder Hiroyuki Imaishi has released new Cyberpunk artwork for the tabletop game's new expansion set, which is due out this year, featuring a full-fledged mission that sees the return of Edgerunners' Falco.
Even if there is another Cyberpunk anime, it's unclear whether Studio Trigger will return. The studio is currently working on New PANTY & STOCKING with GARTERBELT and an animated video project to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Transformers, the first trailer for which was released this week. Imaishi also confirmed in May that he's currently working on a comedy series. It's unclear if that's with Trigger. Netflix is streaming Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, describing the film as: “In a dystopian world rife with corruption and cybernetic implants, a talented but reckless street kid strives to become an outlaw mercenary—an edgerunner.”
