Rick & Morty is moving into a whole new medium in a new preview for the upcoming manga starring fan-favorite villains. Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith are no strangers to tackling different forms of pop culture. From popular TV series to comic books, Rick and Morty have battled monsters in Dungeons & Dragons, battled in their own version of The Hunger Games, and even prepared to move into the anime world in the sequel. Rick & Morty’s upcoming spin-off series on Max. In keeping with the latter, the duo is drawing inspiration from the manga with a new adventure coming this fall and a new preview from Oni Press giving fans a taste of what’s to come. go out.
Oni Press, in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products and Adult Swim, announced earlier this year that a new graphic novel titled Rick & Morty: The Manga Vol. 1 – Into the Robot, Morty! will see the duo tackle a new threat in a comic-inspired medium. The graphic novel is created by writer Alissa M. Sallah (Weeaboo) and artist JeyOdin (Hammer, Miles Away), who will place both in the midst of a colossal crisis from an unexpected enemy: the Giant Jerry. Dubbed the Jiants, Rick manages to create a perfect cyborg for Morty to control as he takes on variants of his father, including a super monstrous version of Jerry with gruesome mutations. Rick and Morty’s debut manga inspired countless anime
What’s unique about the part about Rick and Morty’s manga is that it’s influenced by various iconic franchises. The Jiants were clearly inspired by the Titans in Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan because they were mindless, giant and naked. Meanwhile, the whole concept of Morty using a giant cyborg to deal with the Ant menace stems from the popular giant mech subgenre. In fact, Morty’s machine looks suspiciously like Neon Genesis Evangelion’s most famous robot based on its slim design while hooking up a bit of Mobile Suit Gundam because of its massive sword.
Rick and Morty: Manga is a love letter to Manga fans
Get in Robot, Morty! It’s clearly made with a love for manga and anime in general due to all the Easter Eggs, and it’s a perfect fit for Rick and Morty’s spoof style. Of course, this is not really a surprise to fans of the series. Comics have been taken care of over the years to not only parody some of the things in popular culture but also respect them in their own right. In particular, the Dungeons & Dragons adventure incorporated well-known stats for various characters in the franchise, including making Mr. Meseeks became extremely OP. This manga spoofing has garnered fans of the medium to create something as unique as this says a lot about the creators as they begin to point out flaws in everything while simultaneously being able to do so.
