One Piece Anime’s Wano Arc made Eiichiro Oda cry
The One Piece anime is said to have brought manga author Eiichiro Oda to tears.
Despite the manga author’s seemingly cavalier attitude, this latest report is not the first time Oda’s health has suffered problems due to the nature of his work. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Oda had suffered from chronic sleep deprivation due to the harsh demands often placed on manga authors. The report said he often slept only three hours a day and suffered from both diabetes and gout. He also often skips meals to continue working on One Piece. His assistants are also sleep deprived, only sleeping about 5 hours a day.
This is certainly not the first time someone in the demanding world of manga or anime has suffered health consequences due to the stressful, time-consuming and often arduous nature of the job, causing Creators are sometimes forced to take a break for health reasons. For example, the My Hero Academia manga has been on hiatus multiple times this year alone due to author Kohei Horikoshi’s ongoing health problems.

Famous comic editor Shihei Lin (Spy x Family, Chainsaw Man) revealed that he was suddenly hospitalized after a brain hemorrhage earlier this week.
Other manga creators who have been forced to go on hiatus for years for similar reasons include Yusuke Murata (One-Punch Man), Gege Akutami (Jujutsu Kaisen), Daisuke Ashihara (World Trigger) and Yoshihiro Togashi (Hunter x Hunter). Togashi’s health has deteriorated so much that he recently claimed to have planned four different endings for Hunter x Hunter, including an untimely death. Togashi had to pause his work several times during the manga’s publication process due to debilitating chronic back pain and impaired function in his right hand.
Oda’s One Piece was first published in 1997 in Shonen Jump magazine, meaning the author has now been working on the manga for over 26 years. The series follows protagonist Monkey D. Luffy and his ragtag group, the Straw Hat Pirates, on their quest to find the treasure known as One Piece and make Luffy the Pirate King.
