Through One Piece fan and translator Sandman’s interview, Oda revealed: “As a 17-year-old Luffy, there is no way he can defeat a strong enemy like Yonko. That’s why we need two years. This is for Luffy to grow up.” supplemented by imagination. The reason I chose two years is because I don’t want to make Luffy become such an adult.????.”

As One Piece fans remember, Luffy was only 17 years old when he and the Straw Hats arrived at Sabaody on their way to the new world. After Kuma’s intervention and then Ace’s death, Luffy decided to change the meeting time from three days to two years. Despite Oda’s reasoning, Luffy is still not the youngest character to take down the world’s strongest villains. CBR lists the ages of Naruto characters at the end of Shippuden, revealing that the main character was only 17 years old at the end of the Fourth Great Ninja War, even with the timeskip from Part I. Deku in the final story of My Hero Academia is currently 16 years old, while Jujutsu Kaisen’s Yuji Itadori is even younger at 15 even though Jujutsu Kaisen is scheduled to end this year.
Other interviews that have recently resurfaced suggest that the two-year gap in One Piece is just one of the ways Oda manages his most annoying character. While the timeskip added years to Luffy’s tenure as a pirate, the Straw Hats actually sailed together for less than a year. However, defeating Kaido alone is not enough, as Luffy needs help from Yamato and Akazaya Nine. While One Piece fans often find themselves in discussions about the scale of power, in many cases, pure power always plays second fiddle to relationships and the strength of friendship.
