The ending of Dragon Ball Super Chapter 103 announced that the manga will be on hiatus until further notice. V Jump's editorial board added that they were saddened by the passing of Akira Toriyama and that they wanted to thank him for his achievements. Toriyama recently received TAAF's Achievement Award for his contributions to animation culture and the industry, and the manga and anime community also paid tribute to him earlier this month.
Dragon Ball Super Chapter 103 feels like the perfect time to take a break. Completion of the Superhero arc saw the remnants of the Red Ribbon Army ride off into the sunset, with future attempts to conquer Earth now in vain. The family time between Goku, his niece Pan (who he had forgotten about), and Piccolo created humor. Fans got to enjoy Vegeta's long relationship with Bulma, while the once cold-blooded Saiyan Prince worried about her forgetting him. New bonds are also formed between Gohan and Broly, with Goku noting that Earth is now in safe hands in his absence.
Chapter 103 also makes it clear that Gohan's Beast form is a mutant form and not a variation of Super Saiyan. Beerus's earlier suggestion that Goku become a God of Destruction and Gohan overcome Ultra Instinct left the story open enough for Toyotarou and the V Jump staff to continue the series after its hiatus someday.
Dragon Ball Super is written by Toriyama, with illustrations by Toyotarou. The series has been serialized in Shueisha's V Jump since June 2015, with Toei Animation adapting the series into a 131-episode anime. VIZ licensed the manga, describing the first episode: After defeating Boo, Goku begins to tire of his life on Earth. His wife, Chi-chi, wants him to get a job, but all he wants to do is train and fight stronger enemies. Elsewhere in the universe, the God of Destruction Beerus and his servant Whis are traveling from planet to planet in search of food and entertainment. After blowing up some unfortunate victims, Beerus remembered a man in his dreams with the nickname “Super Saiyan God”, or something like that… The God of Destruction set his sights on Earth to Track down this mysterious man! Maybe this will give Goku something to do?
The length of the Dragon Ball Super manga's hiatus has not yet been confirmed.
