Summary
The Ackerman family in Attack on Titan possesses the power of Titans without needing to transform, making them formidable fighting machines. The Ackermans had access to the military knowledge and experience of their predecessors, giving them an advantage in battle. Despite their powerful abilities, the Ackerman family remained immune to the Founding Titan’s orders, which led to their banishment and a decades-long conspiracy against them.
A fundamental truth of Attack the giant given that not all Titans are created equal. However, mixed in among this diversity of monstrous Titans are Ackerman Clan, who have the power of Titans without having to transform into Titan form.
Years before the events of the main story, in an Eldia very different from that in the manga, the Fritz royal family was once the most powerful nation on Earth. Always looking to modernize their approach, they began experimenting on humans and Titans to see if they could gain the abilities of Titans that were not originally “Subjects of Ymir.” The Ackerman family is the result of this experiment.

As a result of the experiments, Eldian scientists were able to create advanced combat machines. Indeed, Ackerman is physically stronger than normal humans and is capable of achieving powers comparable to Titans without having to transform into a Titan. Furthermore, as revealed in chapter 112 of the Attack on Titan manga, they have access to the knowledge and military experience of every Ackerman who lived before them. The clan’s only weakness is that in order to truly reach their potential, they must undergo some form of major trauma.
An “awakened” Ackerman – like Kenny – is the ultimate fighting machine. Soon, the royal family put its capabilities to good use by assigning members of the Ackerman family the sole responsibility of ensuring the security of the King and royal family. For centuries, they acted as de facto “guardians of the palace,” with their patriarch often considered the “right hand of the king.” This gave Ackerman an influential position in Eldian society.
Titan is strong but has an independent mind
Despite their abilities, the experiment resulted in a trait they later regretted. Unlike other Eldians, most of whom are “Subjects of Ymir” and thus bound by the Founding Titan’s orders, Ackerman is immune to this power. For most of Eldian history, this was not a problem for the royal family until the 145th king decided to end centuries of war with Marley and other nations, isolating Eldia on the island of Paradis. To accomplish this, the King used the Founding Titan to wipe the Eldians’ minds of Titan history and their terrible past. However, this did not work for the Ackermans.
Fearing the clan would betray them and upset that the family did not agree with the plan, the King ordered them expelled from all security duties and approved a plan to ruthlessly hunt them down and eliminate them. Surname. The decades-long conspiracy against Ackerman led to his destruction Ackerman family in Attack the giantbut for Levi and Mikasa, who, like their ancestors, were once again called upon to “secure and protect.”
