The hour-long program will air on September 1, four days before the arson murder trial.
Dr. Takahiro Ueda from Kantele documentary Fuji News Network, Kansai area’s leading station Kantele will broadcast a documentary about Dr. Takahiro Ueda, the doctor responsible for caring for the arsonist Kyoto Animation and Murder suspect Shinji Aoba. The hour-long program will air on September 1, four days before the arson murder trial.
Doctor. Ueda has supervised the suspect’s medical care for the past four years. Aoba suffered extensive burns all over his body after a devastating fire broke out at Kyoto Animation’s Studio 1 building on July 18, 2019. Dr. Ueda said that he was motivated to care for the suspect out of respect for the victims of the attack and their bereaved family members.
“I was overwhelmed because if I let him die, I would [các nạn nhân và gia đình họ] disappointed,” he said.
Documentary: Beyond the Fire ~The Kyoto Animation Incident and 29 Year Programs for Burned Women~ also follows faculty and members of the National Association of Crime Victims and Surviving Families , Masumi Okamoto. Okamoto was a victim of arson in February 1994, after a man poured gasoline on her and set her on fire. Okamoto has struggled to access support and pay medical bills following the case. She advocated establishing a compensation system for victims.

The Kyoto District Court will begin the main trial for the arson murder case that killed 36 people and injured 33 others at Kyoto Animation on September 5. The court is scheduled to announce its verdict on the 25th January 2024.
The trial will have a total of 32 hearings. In September and October, hearings will be held two to three times a week, for a total of 10 hearings for each of those months. In November and December, hearings will be held 5 to 6 times per month.
Kyoto Prefectural Police arrested the suspect, then 41 years old (now 44 years old), who is believed to have used gasoline to start the fire. The man is said to have bought 40 liters of gasoline in two cans and used a cart to transport the gasoline to Kyoto Animation’s Studio 1 building. Japanese prosecutors officially indicted the suspect in December 2020.
Demolition work on Kyoto Animation’s Studio 1 building ended in April 2020. The studio began hiring again in July 2020.
The studio livestreamed a video tribute in July 2022 to mark the third anniversary of the arson attack. The studio also streamed tribute videos to the two previous anniversaries.
