Scott Pilgrim Takes Off showrunners Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski confirmed that the Netflix anime will explore the backstories of characters other than the titular hero.
In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, O’Malley, who created the graphic novel Scott Pilgrim vs. the original World, opened up about having the opportunity to expand the stories of his other characters, including Ramona Flowers, which he did. can’t be done in comics. “We’re trying to get into people’s minds more deeply,” says O’Malley. “Because when I was 25, I didn’t know how these people necessarily felt. But I’ve seen more lives and now I have more context for those characters.”
Grabinski revealed that fans will be introduced to a more fleshed-out Ramona, as the anime plans to add more layers to her character and explore who she is beyond her relationship with Scott. He added, “Especially Ramona. It was interesting to try to give you more of an emotional connection with her and add as much nuance as possible.” Unlike the original series, Grabinski also confirmed that the fan-favorite character will also get a new job instead of delivering Amazon packages.
In addition to Ramona, O’Malley also promises multiple scenes with seven evil exes including Matthew Patel, Lucas Lee, Roxie Richter, Todd Ingram, Kyle & Ken Katayanagi and Gideon Graves. “I think the main regret I expressed about the book was that I didn’t have enough time to develop the evil exes,” O’Malley said. “Especially after learning about the casting, [felt] like, oh, we should have more scenes with evil exes.”
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off won’t be an exact adaptation of the original
After the first official Scott Pilgrim Takes Off teaser was released, O’Malley clarified that fans should not expect the upcoming Netflix animated film to be a “word-for-word remake” of the novel his graphics. He went on to describe the project as “new in many ways,” while also teasing “many exciting surprises in store” for fans. O’Malley and Grabinski are executive producing the series alongside Scott Pilgrim vs. world director Edgar Wright. The streamer is once again teaming up with Science SARU, the Japanese animation studio behind Japan Sinks: 2020, to produce the anime.
