Lupin the Third: Part III 34
Lupin III Part 3 34
ルパン三世 – Part III Ep. 34
Summary/SPOILER Summary
Lupin and Jigen travel through Harlem, searching for a black man named Ed. After giving him money, he gives up the location of the $8 million he stole from the mafia. However, two mafia assassins are after Lupin and Jigen. They shoot Ed, who survives and flees. In another part of New York, Fujiko watches her tag-team boyfriend spray-painting graffiti on a building. When Lupin shows up offering her a role in his heist, she turns him down.
Using a large pickup truck, Lupin, Jigen, and Goemon crash into a mafia warehouse. They make their way to a locked storage room where the boxes are. The trio escapes the mafia guards and returns to their hotel. They find Fujiko waiting for them with champagne. However, when Lupin opens the cabinet, it is filled with newspaper clippings instead of money. Fujiko angrily leaves while the mafia boss attacks Lupin's gang.
The next day, at lunch at a restaurant, Jigen discovers a grenade on their tray. After it explodes, they confront the restaurant owner, who informs them of the attack. Jigen and Lupin quickly discover that almost everyone, including the crooked police, were involved in the attack. Zenigata tracks Lupin and Jigen as they evade everyone and reach an abandoned building. To his horror, a man on a bicycle throws a bomb into the building, causing it to collapse.
Lupin and Jigen escape death and go after the mafia boss and his two henchmen. Fujiko brings her tag boyfriend to the mafia boss's mansion to perform her “art”. Lupin decides to watch her as she tries to solve real money cases. She is quickly caught, so the real Lupin chases the mob away and steals the cases. Fujiko chases after Lupin, as does Zenigata.
Thoughts/Reviews
I can't help but remember John Wick movie has Lupin the 3rd: Part III 34. It's not that we get to see Lupin or Jigen show off their amazing shooting skills. It's the fact that wherever they go, there are assassins waiting for them, trying to get the hit and the reward. That reminder amuses me.
Also, this plot is pretty interesting. I like how the mafia boss used Lupin as a scapegoat to get money from the millions of dollars stashed in his organization. I suspect he used Ed as well. Regardless, I feel like the boss had this planned for quite some time. For the “godfather” (assuming the translation is correct), Ed stole $8 million. But Ed hid it instead of using it to escape. And considering the two henchmen knew Ed’s apartment and such, Ed was also a scapegoat.
I even get the feeling that the mafia boss arranged things with ICPO so that Zenigata wouldn’t be allowed to have a hotel in New York. That way, the mafia boss could just “happen” to meet Zenigata sleeping in Central Park, take him back to his mansion, and feed him information about Lupin. Pretty smart.
Fujiko's part in the story is pretty funny. She has a hippy, weak, tag-team boyfriend. I don't know why she dated him in the first place, since he wasn't rich. He became a plot point in the second part of the story. That aside, I was glad that when Lupin, Jigen, and Goemon scored, they left Fujiko out in the cold.
Final thoughts and conclusions
Final, Lupin the 3rd: Part III 34 was an entertaining enough episode. There were a few annoying moments with Ed. And the mafia boss's solution was cartoonish. But otherwise I had a fun time. Oh, and Lupin even mentioned the movie The Untouchables.
