The “Egghead” storyline in the One Piece manga is currently coming to an end ahead of its highly anticipated next adventure. However, one talented artist has reimagined what the latest story would look like if Kaidou’s son were involved.
An online illustrator named @/couchpotato_op on X (formerly Twitter) uploaded a beautiful fan illustration of Yamato, Kaidou's son, arriving on Egghead Island in style. Like the Straw Hats, Yamato is dressed in a retro outfit that evokes a futuristic 1950s vision. Yamato is wearing a short-sleeved Hawaiian-style jacket with a white t-shirt with a red V-neck opening around it, and blue jean shorts. Of course, the most obvious Egghead costume Yamato wears is the space-age boots.
One Piece's redesigned Yamato outfit perfectly matches Egghead's space fashion style
Although Yamato didn't officially join the Straw Hat Pirates on Egghead Island, he participated in their most important adventure—not to mention the longest adventure in the series to date—in his home country of Wano. This is the storyline where Monkey D. Luffy achieves his new legendary animated form known as Gear 5 to defeat Kaidou of the Beasts and free the people of Wano from his tyranny. Additionally, there appears to be a new storyline going on in the cover art of recent One Piece chapters involving Yamato. These illustrated side stories show Yamato embarking on an epic pilgrimage starting in Chapter 1109. Similar side stories have occurred with characters like Buggy the Star Clown and Enel, the former “God” of Skypiea.
A common criticism of the One Piece series is its restrictive approach to new members of the Straw Hat Pirates, often favoring male characters over female ones. This is even felt by the English cast, who believe that Carrot deserves a place on the Thousand Sunny pirate ship after everything she has been through with the Straw Hats. However, during the “Wano Country” storyline, Yamato repeatedly and consistently refers to himself as “Kaidou’s Son.” This is further emphasized in Chapter 1052, when Yamato joins Monkey D. Luffy and the other male Straw Hat Pirates at a male-only bathhouse, while Kikunojo—who calls herself “a woman at heart”—bathes with Nami and the other girls at a female-only bathhouse.
While the men still outnumber the women in the Straw Hat Pirates, Jewelry Bonney and her Vegapunk variant Lilith have played important roles in the “Egghead” storyline—the former in particular nearly broke the internet with her own legendary transformation. Based on recent developments in the story, it looks like Lilith will be spending more time with the Straw Hats as well.
