Black Myth: Wukong, an upcoming “Soulslike game” based on the 16th century Chinese novel Journey to the West, had an epic trailer at The Game Awards. This new trailer not only shows off the massive enemies with incredible fidelity, but also shows that the mythical creatures of Black Myth: Wukong will be unlike anything players have ever seen in the genre hitherto.
In the works, Black Myth: Wukong was revealed in 2020. The game follows the journey of ‘The Man of Destiny’, a character modeled after the monkey king Sun Wukong. All kinds of creatures, both small and giant, try to get in the player’s way. Through a few trailers, you can see many characters that have appeared in the novel, such as Spider Star, Dai Hung Tinh, Thanh Long…
“Soulslikes games” have always been known for their iconic monster designs, often displaying remarkable creativity and terror. Just looking at the Dark Souls series and the bosses can easily imagine the visual perspective of this game series.
However, Black Myth: Wukong seems to be bucking some of these trends. On the surface, we see that most of these creatures are not as scary or “weird” as in FromSoftware games. The designs of Dai Hung Tinh or Thanh Long in the first trailers are very beautiful and majestic, completely different from the rough appearance of bosses in many other “Soulslikes games”. The world in Black Myth: Wukong is also brighter and more colorful. Although the ruin or destruction is still clearly shown, it is not dark or mysterious.
From now until the game launches, Black Myth: Wukong will certainly bring many other surprises to gamers. Let’s wait together.
