For the first time in history, Steam has surpassed 37 million concurrent users. More specifically, this new milestone recorded 37,242,724 people connected to Valve's platform at the same time. The new record, set on August 25, clearly shows the explosion of Steam in the past 2024 period when at the beginning of the year, the platform broke the previous record of 33.7 million concurrent users. This is said to be thanks to the heat of Black Myth: Wukong.
According to SteamDB, the number of people actually playing a game at the same time has seen a similar increase, from 10.8 million when the January record was set to over 12.5 million at the time of this latest record. And of course, there are always reasons for this massive surge in numbers.
Sometimes it's during a sale or promotion from Steam, and the second reason is the release of a truly high-quality, influential, and popular blockbuster. In this case, it's none other than Black Myth: Wukong.
Certainly, much of the credit for Steam’s current boom goes to GameScience’s blockbuster. The game launched on Steam on August 19 and quickly shot to the top of the charts, becoming the second most played Steam game of all time. Its peak concurrent player count of over 2.4 million broke previous records held by titles like Palworld, CS:GO, and Lord Ark, and is now second only to PUBG Battlegrounds.
And it is very likely that this milestone will not be the final number that both Steam and Black Myth: Wukong can achieve, especially in the current context where there is still no name that is truly capable enough to replace Black Myth: Wukong.
