Josei Jishin magazine conducted a survey of men in their 30s and 40s to rate the most disappointing endings of manga series published in Weekly Shonen Jump since 2014. The survey was conducted at a crucial time for the magazine, which has recently lost some of its most important positions. These are iconic series, including works that became social phenomena and defined an era in manga history.
On August 19, Weekly Shonen Jump's YouTube channel announced that the popular manga series “Jujutsu Kaisen” would end after just five chapters. The announcement came as a surprise to many as the manga is one of the magazine's most successful series, with over 90 million copies sold worldwide.
Jujutsu Kaisen has been one of the magazine's mainstays in recent years, and its end marks the close of another important period in Shonen Jump's history.
Recently, some of the most popular Shonen Jump series have also ended. On August 5, another series that was once the magazine's flagship – “Boku no Hero Academia” also ended its serialization. Or Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba ended in May 2020 after becoming a social phenomenon and Haikyu! ended in July of the same year.
In the midst of this transition, Josei Jishin decided to survey readers' opinions on the endings of some of the most popular series that have ended since 2014. The magazine surveyed men in their 30s and 40s, a demographic that has followed many series. The question posed to them was simple but direct: “Which manga do you think had disappointing endings?”
The survey revealed the opinions of a group of readers who grew up with these stories, and their feelings about the ending of their beloved manga are deeply personal. With so many influential series disappearing from the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump, the survey also reflected the nostalgia and frustration of readers who are now seeing the magazine face a significant overhaul.
