Wistoria: Wand and Sword episode 4 simply expanded the world beyond the classroom this week. It wasn't spectacular, but the production proved worthwhile and we got a bit of a build-up to the Grand Magic Festival. However, this episode raised a few questions more than anything.
Questions that need answers
First and foremost, when are we going to get some background information on Kiki? I understand that she's basically been the “mascot” of the series so far, but seeing her being able to use barrier spells like it's nothing makes me want to know more about her and Will's story.
It's not great in terms of importance, and we see that Kiki doesn't play a big part in the big fights, as seen in episode 2 with Will facing Edward, but it's still nice to know. I can't imagine their storyline being anything epic but it's nice to see.
As for my next question, how many bullies in this academy need an army of two behind them? Shion has two yes men and now we are introduced to Julius who also has his own yes men. I have noticed that bullies tend to go in groups to boost their egos and hide their insecurities, this is starting to show more and more with Shion, but would a little variety with this hurt?
Now that Shion has seen what Will can really do, he's stepped back from making things difficult for him and focused on his own training—great. So now that paves the way for someone to take over the bully role and happen to be one of the most powerful students in the academy (shocker). That being said, it creates a new rivalry for the Grand Magic Festival.
Another concern I had that I wanted to see answered in the Grand Magic Festival was how far Colette could go with her magic. It was clear that Shion was in danger and we already knew she was an honor student and had over 7,200 credits. So now it was time to show us how amazing she really was. Luckily, we get to see that in the next episode.
Wistoria has drawn comparisons to shows like Black Clover and Mashle: Magic and Muscles. So what I like about Colette is that she follows the path of Noelle (Black Clover) as a magical force rather than Lemon (Mashle), who seems to be nothing more than a love interest for Mashle.
My final question was directed to Will—what was his real story? He seemed to have a soft voice for dwarves, who were non-magical and physically aggressive, even working in a tavern they frequented. On top of that, he himself was non-magical but physically gifted.
Is there a little dwarfism in Will after all? Or can Will simply relate to a race of non-magical creatures who are outcasts and shunned for reasons more or less similar to his own?
The Grand Magic Festival – What We Know
If you pay attention to the scene where Colette tries to talk while attending the Grand Magic Festival, you'll notice that the characters in the background have given us hints about what we'll see. Some of these events include the Sky Race, which was also teased in the preview for episode 5, and the Duel, which I'm guessing will be a 2v2 match.
Another hint from the side chat was that the Elf Faction (Elleaf Caanan) favors other elves and those with high ranks in magical skills. So if I had to make a prediction, Eleanor would choose Wignall Lindor to join her faction when all is said and done.
We were teased at the end of episode 3 with Zeo being interested in Will possibly joining his side while the others (Eleanor and Carriot) showed the opposite. And I think it would be too fast for Elfaria to choose Will just to have them reunited that way. Either way, there's still a lot to explore with the big Magic Festival and any new people that might show up.
Each side represents fire, lightning, wind, and ice, corresponding to each Magia Vender we've been introduced TO. But now, thanks to episode 4, we know that the fifth chair represents the Wand of the Lord of Light. However, the mystery of who Masterias Noah is will probably be saved for another day.
Wistoria: Wand and Sword Episode 4 Summary
I mentioned earlier that it was easy to root for Will. Now, knowing that he works two jobs just to make ends meet and pay for school while enduring a difficult, currently magic-free war makes me love him even more. There's nothing in these first four episodes that could make me think otherwise.
Episode 4 Rating: 7/10
