Summary
Dragon Ball Daima’s announcement received backlash from fans unhappy with the series’ direction. Some fans are hoping for an adaptation of the remaining plot of the Dragon Ball Super manga. The decision to turn the entire cast into Chibi-style child versions also received a lot of criticism from fans.
Newly announced Dragon Ball Daima has only just been revealed but for many fans, the latest installment has already had a negative reaction. However, those who aren’t upset by that might be wondering, what exactly is it about this new Dragon Ball series that has these fans so excited?
Dragon Ball Daima was revealed at New York Comic-Con on October 13, 2023, to a surprising amount of backlash. The new series is said to be set between Dragon Ball Z and Super, but features child versions of the entire cast, not just Goku, which initially led to some minor confusion.
The panel’s description of the show suggests that series creator Akira Toriyama was heavily involved in the production of the series, which is usually enough to reassure fans. However, it’s the similarities to previous Dragon Ball efforts that really upset some fans the most.
Fans are worried that Dragon Ball Daima will become GT again
Among the fans who have posted their displeasure online, three main arguments seem to be given as to why they dislike Daima. By far the most popular one is that the series’ premise of Goku returning as a child is too similar to the Dragon Ball GT series, which also opens with Goku being returned to youth. Dragon Ball GT was created with minimal input from Toriyama and was controversial among fans, to the point where it was actually written out of canon when Dragon Ball Super came out. This similarity appears to be superficial, however, and Toriyama’s established role in the production should alleviate concerns about a repeat of the GT.
Another big concern for some fans is the desire to see the remaining story arcs of the Dragon Ball Super animated manga, including the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga and Granolah the Survivor Saga. These story lines are set in space and expand the lore and world of the Dragon Ball Super universe to a greater extent, and feature some fantastic battles that fans can’t wait to see animated . Knowing that a new, different anime project is in the works means there’s a lot of time left until the rest of Super is animated, which has some fans already complaining from the moment the new trailer came out.
Finally, it seems some fans don’t like the idea of turning the entire cast into Chibi-style child versions of themselves. This in itself is a fair enough criticism, and if one doesn’t like the premise or the style then ultimately there isn’t much that can be done to win them over. Some fans have been reasonable and realized that the series might not be for them, while others have been much more rude about their displeasure. While Dragon Ball DaimaIts launch is still a long way off, hopefully its quality will be able to win back some of these dissatisfied fans and make them regret their initial reactions.
