Violet Evergarden: The Movie is now available on Blu-ray and 4K UHD, and even fans who have seen the film have reason enough to check out the new release from Crunchyroll. Released in 2018, the original Violet Evergarden anime series follows the main heroine as she delivers letters to people across a countryside still recovering from the ravages of war. While that premise sounds simple, the series has left a lasting impression on viewers with its stunning animations and touching individual stories. Fortunately for fans, the anime sequel contains everything loved about the original. Unfortunately, like its protagonist, Violet Evergarden: The Movie also has scars.
Set a few years after Violet Evergarden’s ending, Kyoto Animation’s Violet Evergarden: The Movie sees the main heroine that viewers abandoned her after the original series and the Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto spinoff sequel. Memory Doll. Although Violet became a celebrity in the transitional period between TV series and movies, the real story begins when Violet accepts the job of transcribing letters for a terminally ill boy. It’s hard to go into more detail without spoiling the twist, but needless to say, the story puts even more emphasis on Violet and Gilbert’s relationship. Their affection for each other plays at the heart of the film, so audiences who found their dynamic appeal in the original anime will be delighted.
Violet Evergarden: The movie is a fitting ending to the series
While the level of interest in the story will vary, there’s no denying that Violet Evergarden: The Movie is something special purely from a production standpoint. The anime is inherently cinematic with vibrant colors and sweeping scores, so it’s no surprise that the film just amplifies the already outstanding production design of the original film. Those traits are only enhanced by Crunchyroll’s new 4K and Blu-ray releases. Violet Evergarden has always been a beautiful franchise, but it really has never looked better in this physical version. The art cards that come with this new release are also a great gift for die-hard fans of the franchise who want to own a little more of the popular series.
However, for all these strengths, the film is not without flaws. Violet Evergarden is a touching series, but that often happens more due to the individual stories Violet finds herself drawn into than because of the protagonist herself. Violet isn’t a bad character, but her emotionless influence and obsession with Gilbert often make her the least interesting part of her own story. Gilbert himself also failed, and while the film had a great opportunity to turn him into a more flawed and believable character, it never took that opportunity.
For better or worse, Violet and Gilbert are the beating hearts of the franchise. While the characters and their relationships may not appeal to every anime fan, those who love the series the most will surely be pleased that the series leaves behind Violet Evergarden’s two most important characters. . Outside of them, it’s hard to find fault with this movie sequel, which is a fitting epilogue to an impactful series. Its motion, visuals, and sound animations are worth more than the price of the home release. Violet Evergarden: The Movie is something special and any fan of animation must own a physical copy of it on Blu-ray/4K UHD.
