A talented Dragon Ball fan has created an epic sexist Vegeta cosplay.
Posted on Reddit and displayed at Sakura Con recently, the outfit shows the Saiyan Prince’s signature spiky black hair being replaced with a long, flowing hairstyle. It also features a more feminine version of the classic Saiyan blue and white battle armor.
The Dragon Ball multimedia giant began in 1984 with the publication of the first chapter of Akira Toriyama’s manga of the same name in Shuiesha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump. The story follows Son Goku from childhood to adulthood as a young man who loves to fight and is obsessed with food, practicing martial arts and going on adventures. Over the years, Goku and his teammates encounter and battle numerous eccentric but dangerous villains, including galactic tyrant Frieza and the bio-robot Cell.
Dragon Ball Super Franchise
Toriyama’s series is on par with Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece and Takao Saito’s Golgo 13 as one of the best-selling series in history with over 300 million copies in circulation worldwide. Due to its extremely high popularity and acclaim, Dragon Ball has spawned many animated film adaptations by Toei Animation and numerous spin-offs and subtitles. The major franchise also includes loads of video games, collectibles and merchandise, theme park attractions, soundtracks, and fan-generated content, like cosplay.
The gender-swapping Vegeta cosplay isn’t the only example of recent fan-generated content for Dragon Ball. For example, a Twitter user named Berserk Boy posted a colorful 8-bit animation of Goku and Vegeta shooting each other with powerful energy beams. Additionally, cosplayer Filipina rikkaxrose played the fan-favorite character, Bulma Briefs, dressing up the blue-haired scientist and engineer in a classic rabbit costume.
Fans of Toriyama’s work have more to offer than just impressive cosplay and fan art. Notably, Toei Animation and Bandai Namco released a trailer for the new title in the Dragon Ball Z video game series: Budokai Tenkaichi. These games allow players to take control of fan-favorite characters like Son Goku and Vegeta and battle it out. Since the previous main entry of the series came out in 2007, the announcement of Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 4 has come as a big surprise to many. Furthermore, Toriyama’s Sand Land manga, which has a similar aesthetic and tone to Dragon Ball, will get a movie adaptation later this year. Featured voice actor Mutsumi Tamura (Tribe Nine) plays the main character, Beelzebub.
VIZ Media distributes the Dragon Ball manga in North America.
