Urusei Yatsura has released a fun new teaser for the upcoming second half of the film.
Featured on the series’ official website, the video is narrated by showrunner Ataru Moroboshi and introduces the lineup of female characters who will star alongside Lum in future episodes. Ataru is also reluctant to introduce some of the men who serve as his romantic rivals, calling them simply “others.” Wandering Buddhist monk Cherry and Lum’s cousin, Ten, also appear briefly. The second half of Urusei Yatsura, consisting of two parts (or parts), is currently scheduled to premiere on Fuji TV’s Noitanima programming block in January 2024.
Recently, Urusei Yatsura also announced three new voice actors who will join the cast for Season 2. The role of Asuka Mizunokoji will be portrayed by MAO, who is known for playing Shion in the popular isekai series That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime . In the series, Asuka has incredible physical strength and hates most men, including her father and brother. Asuka’s mother and father will be played by Kotono Mitsuishi and Toshiharu Sakurai, respectively. Mitsuishi is perhaps best known for her role as Usagi Tsukino (and Chibi Usagi) in the iconic Sailor Moon series. Sakurai voiced Doranikov in several installments of Shinei Animation’s popular Doremon series.
David Productions’ 2022 adaptation of Rumiko Takahashi’s popular science fiction manga adapts select stories from the series. The story of Urusei Yatsura revolves around a lustful teenager named Ataru Moroboshi, who goes through a series of bizarre events, eventually becoming “engaged” to a beautiful alien princess named Lum, much to the disappointment of his fiancee, Shinobu. Throughout the series, Lum competes with other women for Ataru’s attention and love, her efforts often leading to chaos and unhappiness for Ataru. The first half of Urusei Yatsura premieres in October 2022.
First published in September 1978, Urusei Yatsura was Takahashi’s first major success in manga. Long before Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha debuted, Urusei Yatsura received rave reviews from manga fans who appreciated the story’s unique blend of romance and humor. Contemporary manga artists also acknowledge the series’ legacy; In August this year, more than 30 famous artists celebrated Urusei Yatsura’s 45th anniversary by publishing character sketches of Lum, Ten, and other iconic characters. As of October 2023, there were more than 35 million copies of Urusei Yatsura in circulation worldwide.
The second half of Urusei Yatsura will premiere in January 2024. Season 1 of Urusei Yatsura is available on HIDIVE.
