While I’m a bit confused about the first few episodes in this Spoil/Victor Double Feature, the second half is quite excellent. I would say that “Return” is a near-perfect episode of Undead Unluck. By no means is this the best episode of television I’ve ever seen but it accomplishes what it sets out to do without any major hiccups or warnings. This is a very good thing, because what it asks is: “Let’s be ridiculous, bloody fun.”
I only have one criticism for this episode as a whole, I’m not a big fan of the deep red color palette used for these big fight scenes. The same effect was used in Fuko and Andy’s battle against Gena, and I didn’t like it then either. It’s moody but also so powerful that it made my eyes strain after just a few minutes. The color scheme gets better as the episode goes on, and not everyone has the same problem as me.
What about everything else? Feel free to insert one of those “Chef’s Kiss” GIFs right here because this meal is delicious. It’s just a great time watching all the members of the League use their unique Negative abilities to try to stop Victor’s relentless attack. We don’t know many of these characters very well yet, but there’s a lot of personality shown that endears them to us. Victor splitting himself into a group of cloned Victors from his finger is so cool, and that Billy guy not being able to see all the nonsense going on makes me laugh every time.
The real highlight of this episode is the relationship between Fuko and Andy, the heart of what makes “Return” work so well. Her emotional investment in saving Andy from Victor’s domination not only provides the necessary emotion for a big fight episode like this, but also strengthens her extremely strange relationship. That’s how adorable and trustworthy this weird zombie guy has become. Honestly, it even makes the clumsy fanservice from the early episodes look easier in retrospect, if only because it helps frame Fuko’s desperate attempts to free Victor from his body. his own. Welcome everyone to Undead Unluck, where the scene where the flustered heroine willingly smashes her bare breasts in the hero’s face is more than just character development—it’s a truly sweet moment of romance. side. What a world we live in.
So yeah, if I hadn’t been into Undead Unluck before, this episode completely changed me. Consider James Beckett the newest recruit in the Cult of Undead Andy. The only other complaint I can make about “Return” is that I was once again reminded that being stuck in Hulu Hoosegow could seriously limit this show’s reach and appeal to with the wider anime community. So, dear readers, here’s your homework for the week: Go and tell every single person you know who is interested in That Real Weird Shit to go out and see Undead Unluck immediately. Give them a Hulu subscription if you have to. If they live outside the US, get them one of those VPNs that YouTubers are always selling. We need to spread the good word about Zombie Messiah Dong Dangling and his adorable clumsy Disciple Slash Girlfriend. This would be the perfect Christmas Gift for the goofballs in your life. Just, you know, don’t show it to grandma at a family gathering this holiday season.
Or it can be done! I don’t know what kind of weird violent cartoon your MeeMaw is. Maybe she’s the Gran of Good Taste! Either way, it attracts more and more people to watch this great show.
