「Throwing stones, beating Ninja」
With this season filled with exciting series, it’s easy to overlook series like Under Ninja. Almost making a mistake in its name, this one is unremarkable, certainly off-putting and certainly a consistent flavor if first impressions are anything to go by. Still, there’s room for something interesting – because there’s nothing quite as interesting as MacArthur rocking a ninja star.
According to the RC preview, Under Ninja is essentially a horror movie with light comedy and shounen elements. In this world, postwar Japan has been effectively protected by bureaucratic ninjas who do the dirty work and receive all the praise (and gossip) that comes with the job. . The setting and characters also don’t really deviate from what’s usual for this type of story, with a gritty, callous, and rough appearance and way of speaking being the name of the game. Case in point is protagonist Kumogakure Kurou (Ban Taito), the son of a once-prominent ninja family, who seems to have fallen on hard times before being given a job by a ninja middle manager. . What is the job? Even Kurou doesn’t know at this stage (apparently the ninjas put the requests together themselves), but it involves infiltrating a high school and, through some courtesy Deliberate foreshadowing of ninja infiltrators, dealing with both foreigners and aggressive government agencies. I think you know what’s going on here.
Yet for all its thrilling action focus, what may stand out and influence the impression of Under Ninja is its style. Kurou’s living situation and the crass humor it generates through people like Kawado, a drunken apartment dweller is an example: it works, it’s funny at times, but it certainly won’t should be everyone’s cup of tea, especially when paired with this episode. chose a general introduction. In a way, it’s a lot like Kokkoku, although unlike that series, we’re dealing less with the family supernatural and more with government-sanctioned shounen shenanigans. It’ll take a few episodes to see what this story will look like overall based on this foundation, but I suspect the few minutes here spent with sneaky ninjas taunting eager foreign wannabe ninjas will make out the intended tone.
We’ll have to wait and see what next week has in store in terms of plot and enemies.
