Dark Horse Comics announced a special hardcover edition of Yasuhiro Nightow’s Trigun manga.
According to Anime News Network, the two-book collection will cover the storylines of both Trigun and Trigun Maximum and feature over 1,100 pages of content in the episodes. Trigun Deluxe Edition will hit shelves in December and Trigun Maximum Deluxe Edition will be available in April 2024. Pricing has not been confirmed at the time of writing.
Trigun’s publishing history
Nightow originally published his beloved series in Tokuma Shoten’s Monthly Shōnen Captain magazine from April 1995 to January 1997, with a sequel appearing in Shōnen Gahosha’s Young King OURs from October 1997 to March 2007. The story follows a notorious gunman named Vash the Stampede; Rumored to be a ruthless killer, Vash is, in fact, a pacifist idiot. In 1998, studio Madhouse (One-Punch Man) adapted Nightow’s story into a 26-episode series and a spin-off, Trigun: Badlands Rumble. The show became a cornerstone of 1990s anime culture along with other classics like Cowboy Bebop and Dragon Ball Z.
The Trigun franchise has seen a return to popularity this year with the launch of Trigun Stampede as part of the winter 2023 anime season. Produced by studio Orange, the reboot’s English dub has proven veteran voice actor Johnny Yong Bosch reprises his iconic role as Vash alongside Sarah Roach (Fire Force) and Austin Tindle (That Time I Was Reincarnated as Slime) join the group as Meryl Strife and Millions of Knives, respectively. The series has been given the green light for a second season.
Trigun Stampede has amassed a large fan following, with many members of the anime community hotly debating its numbers compared to Madhouse’s original show. In particular, the characters of the reboot have become a popular source of inspiration for fan-generated content; for example, costume master Insignifaca showcased their Nicholas D. Wolfwood cosplay. Along with an accurate reproduction of the mourner’s signature outfit consisting of a black suit with gray bra and dark sunglasses, the cosplay highlights the character’s giant cross-shaped gun known as the Punisher.
How a Trigun fan brought a revival
Furthermore, a Trigun Stampede fan account with the unique username “bigolas dickolas wolfwood” leveraged his own influence and the franchise’s renewed interest to turn a little sci-fi novel known to become a bestseller. After “bigolas dickolas wolfwood” posted about Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone’s 2019 novel This Is How You Lose the Time War, sales of the book skyrocketed, ranking 21st in Books on Amazon.
Both Trigun Stampede and the first anime adaptation are available to stream on Crunchyroll.
