The return of the popular Netflix animated series Great Pretender was teased on November 10.
Anime distributor Toho Animation released the teaser trailer, which can be viewed below, titled “Original Animation “GREAT PRETENDER” Teaser Movie November 10, 2023″ via its official YouTube channel. The trailer leads with “The Greatest Pretenders return to the party” and ends by saying, “Great Pretenders new release will be announced at Anime NYC on Saturday 11/18!”
Great Pretender, an anime original OVA series, directed by Hiro Kaburaki and animated by WIT Studio (Ranking of Kings, Attack on Titan Season 1-3, Spy x Family in association with CloverWorks). Kaburaki, along with WIT Studio president George Wada, will be in Room 1 of Anime NYC to announce the new announcement. They will be joined by Hitoshi Ito, producer at Production IG (Ghost in the Shell), the company that founded WIT Studio in 2012.
Great Pretender took the world by storm when it aired from June to November 2020 with 23 episodes. Gathered in compelling ‘case’ story lines — Los Angeles Connection, Singapore Sky, Snow of London and Wizard of the Far East — the series quickly became one of the most-watched anime on the platform, with Great Pretender reviews ranking the anime as one of the hottest events of the year. The title has received praise for its engaging and eccentric premise, with viewers describing the anime as “a brilliant comedy crime drama that never slows down.”
Great Pretender wasn’t the only title with a new reveal at Anime NYC. The first episode of Classroom of the Elite Season 3, My Next Life as a Villainess Movie and more will premiere during Crunchyroll’s panel at the event. They will be participating in the premiere of HIDIVE’s isekai series My Instant Death Ability is Too Powerful.
The official synopsis for Great Pretender reads: “Targeting only the villains! The deception, deception, deception has gotten out of control!? Los Angeles, Singapore, London, Shanghai and Tokyo… A huge worldwide scam game starts here!!! Makoto Edamura calls himself “Japan’s No. 1 Genius Swindler.” As usual, he and his partner Kudo tried to scam some French tourists sightseeing in Asakusa and make some quick money… but instead, they themselves got scammed and got a huge amount of money. Stolen money. The culprit is Laurent Thierry, a confident man who even has a hand in the mafia. Edamura was caught up in an unbelievable fraudulent exchange on the world stage!!”
