The latest Evangelion merchandise features sleeping pilots
The Evangelion toys in Re-Ment’s blind box are a far cry from giant robots, even though they do attach to each character’s EVA units. These toys are based on the continuity shown in the Rebuild of Evangelion films, reflected in some of the names. The five characters included in the collection introduce Shinji Ikari, Asuka Shikinami, Rei Ayanami, Mari Makinami and Kaworu Nagisa encapsulated in glass-like “eggs.” Inside, each character is depicted sleeping, either by sitting against a pillow or lying directly on it.
The interior and exterior of the eggs are based on the pilots’ suits from the anime. While they normally retail for 6,325 yen, the five-pack can currently be purchased as a collection on AmiAmi for 4,490 yen (about US$30). However, fans are limited to pre-ordering 12 sets per address, with quantities expected to begin shipping to buyers in June 2024.

Evangelion remains a huge mecha franchise globally
Even though the original anime series released and ended in the 1990s, Neon Genesis Evangelion continues to be one of the most popular mecha anime franchises today. Anime is especially known for its dark, psychological, and subversive nature, in many ways similar to Watchmen’s impact on American comics. The recent Rebuild of Evangelion series rebooted the story, creating some differences from what fans were used to in order to successfully “retell” it.
Even after the newer series ended, Evangelion still received a lot of toys, clothes, and other collectibles. Along with Gundunda and Macross, it remains easily the most famous and recognizable mecha anime property in both Japan and around the world. To this end, the film End of Evangelion is finally being shown in the US several decades after its initial release. This continued success and influence shows how popular this controversial yet iconic property remains among many fans.
