When people think of Weekly Shonen Jump, the names that immediately come to mind are probably hits like “My Hero Academia”, “One Piece” or “Dragon Ball”. However, these are all manga series that were released a long time ago, and some are even about to end.
Recently, Japanese publisher Shueisha unveiled a series that they believe will appeal to the next generation of Shonen Jump readers.

A popular Japanese TV show called Manganuma has focused on Takeru Hokasono's “Kagurabachi”, a new action manga series that began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in September 2023. According to the host Manganuma show Kawashima and Yamauchi, “Kagurabachi” became a huge success among readers, making it appear on the list of most recommended titles at Animate bookstores in 2024.
Kawashima and Yamauchi also recalled a conversation with a Shueisha representative that reflected the publisher's high hopes for the series. “They (Shueisha employees) said they wanted Kagurabachi to lead the next generation of Shonen Jump”, the TV presenter recounted.
While many Shonen Jump heroes are primarily motivated by a desire to protect others or a desire to become stronger, “Kagurabachi” is primarily a revenge story. The plot revolves around a young man named Chihiro Rokuhira, who spent most of his youth training to become a famous blacksmith like his father, Kunishige. However, Chihiro's ambition was destroyed the day his father was brutally murdered. From that day on, his new mission is to avenge his father by hunting down the murderer.
Despite the dark premise of “Kagurabachi,” the series has garnered a large following both domestically and internationally. Although the series currently only has one volume, it has over 200,000 copies in circulation worldwide, including both physical and digital sales of the manga. According to Manganuma, copies of Kagurabachi have almost flown off the shelves of Japanese bookstores, showing that the craze shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
