The world’s largest anime database by both items and users, MyAnimeList, will begin providing big data analytics to Japanese companies, informing business decisions and marketing tactics Future.
MyAnimeList Co., Ltd. released a press release via PR Times on February 16, 2024, announcing that they had converted large data from the website of more than 18 million overseas users into an easily accessible menu. access and has begun exporting this data to businesses as a service through beta. The data – which does not include personally identifiable information about specific users – can report anime success by country and region, trends in membership, scores and discussions – allowing companies find out how their marketing is performing. Additionally, businesses can discover membership overlap between works, allowing inferences to be made from demographic data about why the show is successful, etc. MyAnimeList adds that they can also conduct online surveys on behalf of companies and interview users.

MyAnimeList’s user data has great potential for outside companies
MyAnimeList’s data is extremely attractive to Japanese anime and manga businesses. It reports that 99% of its users are outside Japan, spread across 240 countries and regions. It also has over 18 million subscribers, with over 320 thousand anime and manga related entries. When calculating the number of assets related to a specific anime or manga entry, this number increases to 12 million, and the site adds: “Every week, approximately 4 million ‘Add to List’ actions take place, contributing to global revenue accumulation. Anime and manga trends as data.” The list of Top Rated Titles of 2023 and Top Rated Anime Characters of 2023 went viral as of late, showing that even fans are interested in these details.
The potential of MyAnimeList’s data was on display earlier this week. Journalist Atsuo Nakayama, of the Online News Agency’s President, tracked the cast all over the 2023 anime before that, one month after it aired, and when it ended airing three months later. He found that Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba’s development during and after launch lagged behind both Oshi no Ko and Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku, factors that stakeholders can use to better understand and evaluate the success of their promotional activities.
