One of horror artist Junji Ito’s most famous images finds life in this Azami Kurotani horror cosplay from Uzumaki.
Cosplayer Timunnie recently uploaded a “spiral girl” image to Instagram. The post shows a face-to-face shot of her playing the role of Azami, with excellent make-up effects recreating a famous panel from the manga. It shows the character with the iconic spiral scar on her face, twisted around her left eye, with the aforementioned organ falling into the spiral. Timunnie is also adorned with monochrome face paint, reflecting the colorless aesthetic of the original material.
Cosplayer’s Creation of Spiral Girl
Timunnie adds a unique touch to the cosplay through the use of a headscarf, styled into a hairpin, capturing the short black bob the character shows off in the artwork. The post features two photos, the first showing her looking at her spiral scar with her left eye and the other getting closer as the cosplayer stares into the camera.
There’s plenty of support for the outfit in the comments, with users leaving plenty of positive feedback. Many of them came up with the phrase “Keren banget”, which roughly translates from Indonesian to English as “very cool”. Other commenters responded with words like “this is crazy”. Some people even expressed fear when looking at the pictures.
Iconic Horror Stories by Junji Ito
Junji Ito is a horror artist with many stories to his name. Some of his most famous works are Gyo, Tomie, Black Paradox, No Longer Human, and what is generally considered his masterpiece, Uzumaki. Besides writing books, he also produces a large number of shorts; Notable titles include “The Long Dream,” “The Mystery of Amigara’s Bug,” “Fashion Model” and “Hang Balloons.” His work has been collected into several anthologies, with the Junji Ito Story Collection soon releasing two new titles — Tombs and Soichi.
Ito’s work has also been adapted several times, with the live-action Tomie series ranking as one of his most successful. In addition, his stories have been compiled into two separate anime anthology chapters. The first of these, titled Junji Ito Collection and produced by Studio Deen, received mixed reviews. There is a second attempt from the same studio called Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre, licensed by Netflix. Fans received Japan’s Tales of the Macabre more positively than the original project, but it was still heavily criticized.
Finally, the character Azami could be destined for the small screen as Production IG is working on an adaptation of Uzumaki. However, production has been delayed several times, with no release date at the time of writing.
