Yoshihiro Togashi – author of the manga Hunter X Hunter famously revealed in an interview that his original vision for the story differed significantly from what fans have come to know and love. The interview was conducted on TV Asahi’s Iwakura and Yoshizumi Show.
Hunter X Hunter almost had a time jump from the beginning of the series
Togashi explained that he had his own plans for the first part of the story, focusing on the Hunter exam. However, this idea was revised after discussion with his editor. Togashi originally wanted the main character Gon to fail the Hunter exam. The series then takes a time jump, from one to several years, showing a more mature Gon trying to pass his exams again.
Togashi’s revelations highlight the significant influence publishers have in the manga industry. He shared that after consulting with the editor, the author’s original idea was rejected and the story was changed so that Gon could pass his exam. The interesting thing is that the character Killua, Gon’s best friend, remains the same as the original idea.
Togashi’s story is not unique in the manga industry. Another notable example is Masashi Kishimoto – author of Naruto. He initially had no interest in the Chuunin Exams section, but was encouraged by his editors to pursue it.
This emphasizes the important role editors play in shaping the direction of comic books, often to great success.
The time jump and potential impact on the story
Time jumping is a common storytelling technique in anime and manga, used to show dramatic changes in characters’ personalities over the years. The One Piece series is a prominent example that used this technique effectively.
Similarly, with an experienced writer like Togashi, he could also successfully implement this idea in Hunter X Hunter. However, the time jump so early in the story, along with Gon’s initial defeat, may be a unique but unwise approach compared to what has already happened that the audience has seen.
The editor’s comments are correct
While the idea of a time jump may be appealing, the final version of Hunter X Hunter again allowing fans to follow Gon’s journey and his development as a main character.
Obviously, the editor’s comments to the author to change the original idea play an extremely important role in the case of Hunter X Hunter. Especially for the appeal and success of the series. Even so, many fans still wonder what the original story Togashi came up with for his manga would be like if implemented.
