The first episodes of the anime premiered in January 2023. The production team delayed episode 4 that year from January 28 to February 18. The anime production committee cited COVID-19 is the reason for that delay. The production team then delayed episodes 9 and beyond to March 2023, citing the impact of rising COVID-19 cases on the show’s production schedule. Episodes 9-12 aired simultaneously on July 23. Crunchyroll streamed the anime as it aired.
Square Enix describes the game’s story:
NieR:Automata tells the story of androids 2B, 9S and A2 and their fight to reclaim a dark, machine-driven world overrun by powerful machines.
Humanity has been driven from Earth by mechanical beings from another world. In a last-ditch effort to reclaim the planet, the human resistance sends a force of robot soldiers to destroy the invaders. Now, a war between machines and robots is raging… A war that may soon reveal a long-forgotten truth about the world.
Ryouji Masuyama (Blend S, Hello WeGo!) directed the first courses at A-1 Pictures, and Masuyama was also in charge of series writing alongside Yokō Tarō of the original game. Jun Nakai designed the characters and served as animation director. MONACA composes music.
