The Rose of Versailles is celebrating Marie Antoinette's birthday by sharing some new preview images from MAPPA's upcoming film. Ai Yoshimura directed, with Tomoko Konparu writing the script, Mariko Oka designing the characters and Hiroyuki Sawano providing music with KOHTA YAMAMOTO. The film is scheduled to open in Japan on January 31, 2025.
The character's birthday coincides with the real Marie Antoinette's (November 2, 1755), while Aya Hirano voices her in the anime. Check out the new preview images below.

Other actors in the new film include Shunsuke Takeuchi as Alain de Soisson, Takuya Eguchi as Victor Clement de Girodelle and Miyu Irino as Bernard Chatelet. You can watch the main trailer below.
The Rose of Versailles is based on the romance and historical manga series by veteran mangaka Riyoko Ikeda. It was serialized by Shueisha and released from May 1972 to December 1973. This manga is considered one of the pioneers of the shojo genre. TMS Entertainment animated the original 1979 animated film The Rose of Versailles, with Tadao Nagahama and Osamu Dezaki as directors. The series aired forty episodes on Nippon TV.

Oscar François de Jarjayes, raised as a “son” and heir to a general's family, dresses as a beautiful woman in men's clothing. Marie Antoinette came from neighboring Austria as a bride to become a noble and graceful queen. Oscar's servant and childhood friend, commoner André Grandier. Hans Axel von Fersen, a handsome and intelligent count from Sweden. They met in Versailles, France at the end of the prosperous 18th century and lived their own destiny beautifully despite being swept away by the flow of time.
The Rose of Versailles increased Japanese interest in French tourism, with Ikeda receiving a “Legion of Honor” award from the French government in 2009. The film adaptation was announced in September 2009. 2022, four decades after the original anime series ended airing in 1980.
