Summary
Ghost Reaper Girl continues after a more than year-long hiatus, with new characters inspired by Lovecraft’s Cthulhu mythos. The new Cthulhu-inspired characters in chapter #36 of Ghost Reaper Girl only loosely resemble their original counterparts, but some of the earlier characters closely resemble Lovecraft’s creations. Ghost Reaper Girl introduces Bastet, an Egyptian goddess, and connects her to Lovecraft’s Nyarlathotep, adding depth to the story’s mythology.
Warning: Spoilers for Ghost Reaper Girl chapter #36The Lovecraftian Shonen Jump+ story Ghost assassin girl finally returned after a hiatus of over a year which was officially announced at the end of May 2022. The latest installment picks up right where chapter #35 ended on May 2nd with three out of four characters The new object shares the same name as HP Lovecraft’s Great Elders in the Cthulhu myth.
Before the announcement in May, the biweekly Ghost Reaper Girl had to be temporarily suspended due to mangaka Akissa Saiké’s poor health. With the exception of Ghost Reaper Girl’s three-month break, Ghost Reaper Girl would normally return to action in a month after an additional two weeks of rest, but by May, it proved to be too much for Saiké .
His official announcement in chapter #35.1 states that he cannot continue to work in this way and will continue to write according to the instructions of medical supervision. Luckily for fans, the hit manga is back with more Lovecraft-inspired characters than ever before.
Ghost Reaper Girl returns with new characters inspired by Lovecraft
Ghost Reaper Girl returns on October 30 with the surprise release of chapter #36. In a surprise twist, the eponymous hero, also known by her human name Chloe Love, receives a request to meet with the director of the organization that hired her to hunt ghosts, Arkham Bullet. Chloe’s actions were prompted by Arkham’s recent decision to send characters based on the monster Cthulhu to hunt her and her fellow spirits down because of their connection to the spirit Kai Iod. Arkham has considered Kai a potential threat because he recently succumbed to his alter ego Yog of Destruction – certainly Lovecraft Girl’s version of Yog-Sothoth – and Yog of Destruction can Open the gates of Hades.
Three of the four directors that Chloe and her friends meet in chapter #36 are Great Elders of the Cthulhu myth, including Ithaqua, Tsathoggua, and Hastur. Like many of the Ghost Reaper Girl characters based on Lovecraft’s monsters, these three characters do not bear any immediate resemblance to their main influences other than having the same name. For example, Ghost Reaper Girl’s Ithaqua is a fair-faced, fair-haired young man as Lovecraft depicted the creature as a fearsome giant, only roughly human in appearance with glowing red eyes.
Ghost Reaper Girl ties Lovecraft to ancient Egypt
Interestingly, the fourth director in chapter #36 is Bastet, an Egyptian goddess who does not appear in Lovecraft’s Cthulhu mythos. This isn’t the first time Ghost Reaper Girl has featured a creature from someone other than Lovecraft like author Frank Belknap Long’s Tindalos Hound. Although not directly mentioned by Lovecraft, Bastet complements another Lovecraftian character in Ghost Reaper Girl – director Nyarlathotep, who sometimes appears as an Egyptian Pharaoh. In Ghost Reaper Girl, her character is sometimes shown as an Egyptian-style symbol. The fact that Bastet was an Egyptian goddess and that Nyarlathotep was greatly influenced by Egyptian legend made the inclusion of Bastet appropriate.
With new Lovecraft-inspired characters and a thrilling new chapter, fans of Shonen Jump+’s Lovecraftian hit have more than enough reason to be excited. Hopefully mangaka Akissa Saiké’s health will stabilize so readers can find out which characteristics of these three new Great Old Ones actually correspond to Lovecraft’s original creations in the story’s next chapter.
