The Transformers franchise is turning 40
Released in 1984, Hasbro and Takara's The Transformers was a combination of characters from various toy lines, such as Diaclone. As part of a multimedia push alongside Hasbro's GI Joe property, a Transformers comic book and animated series were released through Marvel Entertainment and Sunbow Productions. Helping catapult the franchise to stratospheric popularity, the cartoon ran for three lengthy seasons and one truncated “fourth season.” In Japan, this final season was scrapped entirely, with the Japanese “Generation 1” continuity lasting longer through a Japan-exclusive Transformers anime trilogy and an OVA titled Topic Transformers: Zone.
The franchise's 40th anniversary is being celebrated in many ways, most notably through fan-targeted Transformers figures and collectibles. Likewise, several comics and other products will be released throughout 2024, including the planned run of Marvel Comics' original Transformers series. The entire series now has an evergreen aesthetic, with most of the character designs being based on what the Transformers looked like in the original cartoon.
