In the story, Oogie Boogie begins his life as a young and energetic monster having fun with his best friend. Thanks to the competition to become the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, Oogie falls under the influence of Edgar – the former Pumpkin King. This origin story shows that he always had the potential to be selfish, but his evil was directly fostered by his future mentor. His competitive nature, combined with youthful jealousy and eventual resentment towards his rivals, leads to a much darker future for him. However, cheating and major personality changes were not the only things he received from Edgar’s influence.
Oogie Boogie’s lair is an impressive underground hideout, but it’s not entirely of his own design. That was one of the things the emerging villain received from his “mentor.” The hideout once belonged to Edgar, but Oogie took it for himself, partly as revenge for his loss in the contest in Halloween Town. Even his henchmen Lock, Shock and Barrel joined forces with him thanks to Edgar’s intervention. Despite their age – toddlers in this story – the former Pumpkin King advised Oogie to use their services for contest events, such as tower building and pumpkin carving . This Disney comic details the first of many plans hatched by their ghostly boss.
While Oogie may have had the potential to become evil thanks to his competitive nature, Edgar and his inability to keep his promises pushed him into the role of villain. This is especially true given how impressive his collection of walking sack beetles was at a young age. He is willing to cheat and try to gain the upper hand in any way possible. However, he did not prove effective in finishing what he started with optimal effort. As a result, the iconic Disney villain ends up being despised and gives in to his negative emotions, while only believing in himself and his own abilities. Although Boogie seems like a villain with little substance, The Nightmare Before Christmas: Battle for the Pumpkin King prove Oh my God has much more history and depth than fans might initially think.
