While Oh my God may be known as the main antagonist of Nightmare before Christmasa new comic from Disney reveals the true villain of the story. The Nightmare Before Christmas: Battle for the Pumpkin King introduces the former Pumpkin King, who precedes Jack in this position. The original film’s core villain is encouraged to become a villain through another character’s nefarious plans.
The Nightmare Before Christmas: The Battle for Pumpkin King, published by TokyoPop, features a creative team of Deborah Allo, Roberto Scalia, Don Conner, DJ Milky and Shaun McLaughlin. The story details how Jack Skellington became the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town.
A fierce rivalry flares up between Jack and his best friend, Oogie Boogie, threatening to separate them forever. However, the breakup was not entirely Oogie’s fault.
Oogie Boogie is influenced by a brand new Disney villain
The former Pumpkin King, Edgar, is preparing to retire from his role. To choose a successor, a contest is held between two candidates nominated by the citizens of Halloween Town: Jack Skellington & Oogie Boogie. However, Edgar is not ready to completely give up his role. He enjoys the control he has over the town, leading him to side with Oogie Boogie and help him cheat in the competition. This would allow him to use the future villain as a puppet that obeys his wishes. However, Edgar’s assistance did not help Oogie win, causing the young man to become vengeful.
Although Oogie Boogie would eventually become an iconic Disney villain, he previously had a very happy life with Jack as his best friend. However, his competitive nature was taken advantage of by Edgar, and his worst traits exasperated him to the point that he seemed beyond redemption in some way. He is not willing to play by the rules, becomes more selfish, and blames others for his failure to become the Pumpkin King. However, this would never have happened if Edgar had been fair about the competition from the beginning. If he hadn’t encouraged poor sportsmanship and tried to be controlling, Oogie Boogie might have been friends with Jack for a long time.
Edgar’s influence and refusal to move on with his life leads to Halloween Town having a greater villain in the future, making Edgar himself the true villain of the story. Without his influence, Oogie Boogie might still be a good character instead of an isolated agitator. Additionally, the former Pumpkin King was also responsible for encouraging Oogie to team up with Lock, Shock, and Barrel, giving the future villain his own mischievous minions. If he focused on what was truly good for Halloween Town, he would let the competition play out and then become a true mentor to the winner. Oh my God could be the villain in The Nightmare Before Christmas, but The Nightmare Before Christmas: Battle for the Pumpkin King proving that Edgar is responsible for unleashing his evil potential.
