Luckily for worried fans, a Shonen Jump initiative called NEXTWAVE has been launched in search of the next big manga. Three people were chosen and one of them named Kagurabachi was a huge hit on social media without a single chapter being released.
Shueisha’s Tezuka Awards are where authors can finally showcase their outstanding writing and artistic abilities, while also having the chance to have their manga published by a powerhouse publisher. The winner is decided by Masashi Kishimoto, Eichiro Oda, Akira Toriyama and other iconic Shonen Jump creators. The fact that Kagurabachi was chosen by these legends as Shonen Jump’s next great work speaks to the quality of this manga. In a Tweet from the official Shonen Jump Twitter account, they announced the exciting new manga “Kagurabachi by Takeru Hokazono joins the weekly Shonen Jump lineup! A former swordsmith embarks on a bloodthirsty path against a group of witches who have taken over the city!”

Dark series like Hell’s Paradise have taken over the manga and anime industry and Kagurabachi seems to be the latest. The main reason why the upcoming movie has fans going crazy is because of the main character Chihiro. He is a sword user and his black hair ironically makes him stand out from the other colorful main characters. His gloomy red eyes, black cloak, and overall personality equate to love at first sight for good reason. Having a fighter as the main character is especially interesting for Shonen Jump because that role is often dominated by supporting characters like Sasuke or Zoro.
It’s surprising to see the hype behind this manga since there’s almost no information about it other than a short summary from Shonen Jump’s Twitter account. To our surprise, the first chapter was leaked, which doesn’t usually happen with new series. Usually, only famous manga like One Piece get leaked before release. This speaks to the anticipation for the series. However, this is not surprising as the main character’s dark and gloomy personality makes this manga stand out from other series. It prevents generally more positive happy-go-lucky protagonists like Tanjiro from Demon Slayer or Deku from My Hero Academia.

The story focuses on Chihiro, a former swordsmith turned swordsman. He is out to get revenge on a group of witches who have taken over a city. What motivated him to follow the path of revenge is unknown. The power system seems similar to that of Jujutsu Kaisen, with the main character having koi fish floating around him. The plot sounds promising but the quality of the art is what really sells it. Fans are excited to see a talented artist like Takeru Hokazono take the helm of a manga and bring something new to the world’s most popular manga magazine. Vibrant art and an action-packed story will motivate Kagurabachi to even greater heights as it looks alternative Shonen Jump’s manga giant.
