First released in 2010 with a storyline composed by Sergio Pablos, Despicable Me immediately captivated audiences around the world, opening up the potential to develop into a multi-part animation brand. So, when the sequel to Despicable Me 2 was released and set box office records, Gru and especially the Minions began to become cultural “phenomena”.
To date, the three Despicable Me films and two Minions spin-off films have brought the film brand a total of 4.6 billion USD. This impressive number has brought the brand to the “golden table” of highest-grossing animated movies of all time.
Besides movies, video games, short films and brand publications are also extremely popular. And with Despicable Me 4, Universal studios will expand Gru’s world even further with the desire to continue extending the success of the brand.
The story of Moon Stealer 4 follows Gru as he fights against the world’s supervillains with help from his wife Lucy and their children. This sequel will see Gru progress through his transition from villain to hero, as he is forced to grapple with the consequences of his past villainy. Because now, Gru has a family of his own to love and care for.
In the recently released opening trailer, there is a happy and happy scene at Gru’s family home. While in the backyard, the Minions are playing around at the swimming pool, Gru is like a good dad, going shopping at the supermarket and bringing food home for the family. The trailer also revealed a completely new plot, the Gru family now not only has three little daughters, but also has one more member – their baby son.
But it seems that the father-daughter relationship is not very “close”, when taking the baby, he only always smiles at Lucy, and when he calls Gru twice, he refuses to say anything. The peaceful and happy atmosphere did not last long, when suddenly a strange man knocked on the door and brought “heavenly” news: Gru’s family was about to be in danger.
As soon as he finished speaking, people’s cries rang out on the street because a scary robot was roaming across the middle of the street. The driver of this scary robot is the escaped criminal Maxim Le Mal, who is determined to seek revenge on Gru. To ensure safety, Gru is forced to take the whole family to a safe house. But they can’t just sit at home forever, Gru and his family have come up with a plan to deal with the villain.
There were many children in the family, so Gru and his wife Lucy had to split each person in charge of two children. The eldest and youngest sister were taken by Gru to break into that mysterious room, while the two younger sisters and their mother went to get food supplies for the family. Towards the end of the trailer, there are a series of exciting action scenes, super cool but also super silly.
Professional Gru is still as clumsy as ever, plus the youngest child is in trouble, so even with the help of the Minions, everything is still out of control. What will the whole family do to protect each other and the city from the plots of a cruel villain?
Despicable Me 4 continues to be directed by Chris Renaud, who directed Despicable Me 1, Despicable Me 2, and The Lorax. The script was written by Mike White (The White Lotus), and like all Illumination films, Chris Meledandri continues to executive produce.
Actor Steve Carell (The Office) will return to voice Gru and Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids) will voice his wife Lucy Wilde. Miranda Cosgrove (iCarly) still voices the role of Margo, Gru’s eldest daughter, and Steve Coogan (Philomena) voices Silas Ramsbottom. Audiences of Moon Stealer 4 can continue to look forward to Pierre Coffin’s “super crazy” performances when he once again voices all the Minions in the movie.
THE MOON STEALER 4 (original title: DESPICABLE ME 4) is expected to premiere on July 2024.
