Pon no Michi, a new original anime from Fire Force Season 2 director Tatsuma Minamikawa, teases fans with its energetic and colorful main visuals.
Posted to the upcoming film’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, the image highlights the anime’s main cast as well as their individual styles and personalities. The social media post also confirmed that voice actor Hibiku Yamamura (Smile Down the Runway) has joined the cast; Other experienced actors contributing to Pon no Michi include Kaori Maeda (Fruits Basket), Iori Saeki (The Executioner and Her Way of Life), Shion Wakayama (Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation) and Akio Otsuka (The Genius Prince’s Guide to Raising a Debt-Free Country).
Studio OLM (Komi Can’t Communication) is producing the new series and is scheduled for release in January 2024. Pon no Michi will follow a group of high school girls who are passionate about the mahjong puzzle game, making The original anime is a stark departure from some of Minamikawa’s previous directorial works, including Fire Force. A dark fantasy story set in an alternate history of Japan, Fire Force centers on Shinra Kusakabe, a young man with the ability to set fires who joins a team of specialized firefighters.
Atsushi Ohkubo’s Fire Force manga debuted in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine in September 2015, with the final chapter releasing in February 2022. Like the mangaka’s previous series, Soul Eater, Fire Force quickly gained a large fan following, despite the story having a large cult following. has received some criticism for being too reliant on fan service. Regardless, Ohkubo’s work has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide, making Fire Force one of the best-selling manga in history alongside classics like CLAMP’s Cardcaptor Sakura and Rave Master by Hiro Mashima.
David Production (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind) produced two Fire Force anime adaptations, with the first premiering in September 2015. However, earlier this year, it was reported that a new production company – Studio Shaft – will handle animation moving forward. At the time of writing, the official release date of Fire Force Season 3 has not been revealed.
In addition to anime adaptations, Ohkubo’s manga has also been adapted into other media. For example, three different stage plays were released theatrically in Japan, and a tie-in video game—Fire Force: Enbu no Shō—was announced for 2022.
