The Story of The Eminence in Shadow
Daisuke Aizawa’s light novel series began serialization on the user-created self-publishing website Shōsetsuka ni Narō in May 2018, before being acquired by Enterbrain, which published the book in November 2018. Like many other isekai stories, The Eminence in Shadow begins with a seemingly normal teenager being hit by a truck, dies, and is transported into a fantasy world. Reincarnated as Cid Kagenou, the young man forms a secret organization called Shadow Garden to fight the evil Diablos Cult. However, The Eminence in Shadow presents an interesting twist on the isekai formula; while the Diablos Cult is in fact real and a very dangerous threat to the world, Cid firmly believes that the scenario is an elaborate role-playing game orchestrated by his new friends.
The uniqueness of the popular subgenre has resonated greatly with light novel readers; As of February, Aizawa’s series has sold more than four million copies worldwide and inspired a spin-off manga series, titled The Eminence in Shadow! Shadow Side Story, appearing in Comp Ace from July 2019.
The Nexus adaptation debuted its first season last October as part of the fall 2022 anime series. It is directed by Kazuya Nakanishi (Darwin’s Game) and written by Kanichi Katou (Welcome to Demon School, Iruma). -kun), the film performed well with critics overall and garnered a devoted fan following. The Eminence in Shadow stars Seiichirō Yamashita (Suppos a Kid From the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town) as Cid alongside Kana Hanazawa (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) as Princess Alexia Midgar and Asami Seto (My Next Life as a Villainess: All roads lead to destruction!) as Alpha.
Yen Press distributes both Aizawa’s light novel series and the spin-off manga in North America.
