Attack on Titan is inspired by the charming German town of Nordlingen
Attack on Titan creator Hajime Isayama drew much of his inspiration from natural history, geopolitics, and pop culture – including the architecture of the series’ main setting, Shiganshina District.
It turns out that many of Attack on Titan’s houses, cities, and districts are located in a small German settlement called Nordlingen – a town in the Swabia region of Bavaria.
Records show that the Nordlingen settlement dates back to 898 AD. It was approximately 1,110 years ago when the Attack on Titan manga first appeared in Bessatsu Shonen Magazine.
The town was built in the impact crater of a meteorite that hit Earth about 15 million years ago, leaving the surrounding area covered in more than 72,000 tons of microscopic diamonds – on a bright day, many buildings. Houses in Nordlingen sparkle in the sunlight.
It’s no surprise that the town is flooded with tourists since the Attack on Titan series exploded in popularity. A video from YouTube channel Hangry By Nature exploring Nordlingen discovered a wooden door that had been vandalized by hundreds of Attack on Titans fans.

Some of the messages include “Isayama is a genius”, “Jean be my husband” and “AOT lovers unite” as well as many doodles of some of the series’ most infamous characters story.
Nordlingen itself is only one of three towns in Germany that still have completely intact city walls – although their height is certainly nowhere near the walls of Shiganshina.
Those barriers, built hundreds of feet into the air by the Eldians trapped inside, were inspired by the picturesque mountain ranges Isayama grew up in in Oita, Japan.
In an interview with NHK, Isayama revealed that his hometown feels isolated from the rest of civilization thanks to the majestic mountains that surround him and that he constantly wonders about these ‘monsters’. ‘Who lives outside them.
Attack on Titan may be set in a fictional world with geography suggesting the wider world is modeled on Madagascar, Africa – however, the show has a distinctly German flavor with many of its characters. objects have German names such as Jaeger, Kruger and Braun.

If you recognize Nordlingen from Attack on Titan, this town is where the Glass Elevator appeared in the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
If you ever visit Germany or if you’re already a resident, there are plenty of fun things to do in Nordlingen, beyond everything Attack on Titan:

Enjoy a drink at Das Stapfele, an underground restaurant and historic wine cellar history. Delicious food at Bayrish Pub, a unique combination of Irish and Bavarian traditions.
