The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and the Heron the award for Best Animated Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday. The film competes with Elemental, Nimona, Robot Dreams and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in this category.
Miyazaki and producer Toshio Suzuki could not accept the award in person. This is Miyazaki’s second film to win after Spirited Away in 2003. He also received nominations for Howl’s Moving Castle and The Wind Rises.
No anime films received nominations at last year’s 95th Academy Awards. Masaaki Yuasa and Science SARU’s INU-OH, Hiroyasu Ishida and Studio Colorido’s Drifting Home, and Atsuko Ishizuka and Madhouse’s Goodbye, Don Glees! were eligible for the award that year.
