Manga sales in North America are increasing, paralleling the growth of the anime industry in recent years. The coronavirus pandemic has prompted a surge in manga and anime consumption among quarantined fans, with numbers continuing to rise even after the initial spike. A recent report revealed the best-selling manga series in North America for 2023.
Although manga sales in North America are increasing, they still lag behind Japan's strong market. In 2023, the best-selling manga in Japan was Blue Lock, exceeding 10 and a half million copies sold, followed by Jujutsu Kaisen and One Piece.
However, the best-selling manga in North America differed significantly from Japan, with Blue Lock absent from the top five rankings.
In North America, Demon Slayer regained its position as the best-selling manga, outpacing perennial favorite One Piece. The rankings for 2023 are as follows:
1. Demon Slayer – 2,050,0002. One Piece – 1,900,0003. Chainsaw Man – 1,235,0004. Jujutsu Kaisen – 1,080,0005. My Hero Academia – 900,000
Demon Slayer's resurgence can be attributed to new readers discovering the series, with its first volume emerging as the best-selling individual volume in North America. Meanwhile, One Piece's enduring popularity, coupled with its huge circulation, has contributed to its strong sales performance.
