Anime Oshi no Ko is coming to an end
Akasaka did not give a statement on when fans can expect the ending of Oshi no Ko. The manga began serialization in Japan on April 23, 2020, currently at Chapter 121. However, the television anime began streaming this year. Season 1 of Oshi no Ko will have 11 episodes, 10 of which have already aired. The premiere of the series is 90 minutes long and temporarily ranks Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood as the highest rated anime on MyAnimeList.
Although Oshi no Ko has become a huge hit with the anime community, the series has drawn criticism for using real-life celebrity tragedies as inspiration for its story. Kyoko Kimura, the mother of Japanese professional wrestler Hana Kimura, has spoken out against the anime for having based an episode on the events that led to her daughter’s suicide. The episode in question is Episode 6, “Egosurfing,” in which actress Akane Kurokawa became the target of cyberbullying for slapping her co-star Yuki Sumi during a reality dating show. The events reflect the online harassment Hana faced because of a verbal conflict with a fellow reality star on Terrace House: Tokyo 2019–2020.
The Oshi no Ko fandom has been flagged by Watchdog Group for harassment of the Kimura family after the mother publicly criticized the series for using her daughter’s death for its plot. Other alleged inspirations for Oshi no Ko include Japanese child star Mana Ashida who inspired the creation of Kana Arima. Ashida, who played the child Mako of Rinko Kikuchi in Pacific Rim, was taken advantage of by her mother and agent during her childhood career and dwindled in popularity as she grew older.
Oshi no Ko follows Aqua and Ruby as they follow two different paths based on their pop idol mother. Ruby is trying to follow in her mother’s footsteps as an entertainer, while Aqua is trying to find out who was responsible for orchestrating her mother’s death. The drama has received critical acclaim for its critical commentary on the entertainment industry and the tumultuous relationship between talent and fans.
