Manga authors often change their minds about their stories in the middle of writing, and this certainly happened to Gege Akutami, author of Jujutsu Kaisen. Specifically, the main character Yuji Itadori almost had a much more tragic ending, before Akutami decided to change direction.
In an interview, Akutami said that he has much darker and more brutal plans for Yuji Itadori. One of the most shocking scenes in Jujutsu Kaisen is when Sukuna, the cursed soul in Yuji's body, takes away his heart during his battle with Megumi Fushiguro.
Initially, Akutami planned that Yuji would not survive Sukuna's attack. This is quite shocking considering how important Itadori is to the story and the prominent role he still plays.
Akutami thought that Yuji would die right at the start of Jujutsu Kaisen and never wanted him to live that long. And the most shocking thing is that the author of Jujutsu Kaisen is not even a big fan of the main character. Akutami stated that he would not get along with Yuji Itadori, which is surprising given the character's central role in the series. Therefore, the author wouldn't feel the least bit guilty about letting Yuji die, since he has no personal connection to Yuji, even though he is a fan-favorite character.
It seems Akutami has the trait of not liking his own characters very much, he even celebrated the death of Gojo Satoru, another extremely popular character among Jujutsu Kaisen fans. This even helps us understand why it's sometimes difficult to call Yuji the “main character”, since several other characters, including the antagonist, are more prominent.
In the end, Yuji negotiates with Sukuna to come back to life and join his friends. Sukuna proposed a deal that would allow him to temporarily control Yuji's body. Yuji did not accept the terms, chose a fight and quickly lost, forgetting the entire conversation but fortunately he came back to life. Later, this decision had tragic consequences.
But that event showed Yuji's strong character and his dedication to fighting for good. He was so concerned with protecting others that he forgot to protect himself in his deal with Sukuna.
Sukuna controls Yuji's body, threatening to kill Megumi, pushing him into a desperate situation. But that doesn't make Yuji a weak character. Sukuna even calls him “unbreakable”, recognizing Yuji's will far exceeds that of anyone in the series.
From the beginning, Yuji's journey from an ordinary student to a spellcaster was marked by painful losses, but despite this, he continued to fight to make the world a place where better. Yuji's story shows that despite his weaknesses and challenges, he has become an admirable character, perhaps even capable of saving the world from Sukuna's wrath.
