Gege Akutami, the author and artist behind Jujutsu Kaisen, has revealed the two Shonen Jump authors he admires most — and why he will never imitate their work.
Translated by Edomonogatari, Jujutsu Kaisen’s official Fanbook features an interview with Tite Kubo, creator of Akutami and Bleach. Among the many topics covered in the interview, the conversation about Kubo’s favorite scene in Jujutsu Kaisen turned to a discussion about why future manga artists should never copy works of others. To prove his point, Akutami expressed his admiration for both Kubo from Bleach and Tatsuki Fujimoto from Chainsaw Man.

Chainsaw Man and Bleach have styles that are too different for JJK’s creator to imitate
“I consider people like Kubo-sensei and Tatsuki Fujimoto-sensei of Chainsaw Man to be people with strong identities, and it would be unwise for ordinary people like me to carelessly imitate the authors,” Akutami said. their caliber”. “Since their creations are the product of instinct and the talent that comes with such a strong identity, I would only hurt myself if I tried to copy their methods. That’s why I try to avoid this pitfall. I tried my best to avoid this pitfall. always loved reading Bleach, but I knew that imitating it would be the death of me. In the end, I couldn’t copy it because it was so unique. So whenever I hear people say that my series reminds them of Bleach, I hesitantly respond with something like, ‘Well, sure, I guess… But…’”
Akutami is not shy about admitting Bleach’s influence on Jujutsu Kaisen. In this interview, Akutami even shares his memories of reading Bleach Chapter 1 as a 4th grader and how it influenced his knowledge of manga authors. However, despite being inspired by Bleach and other manga creators, Akutami never imitated their styles because these styles were ingrained in the creator himself and any attempt to imitate would only leads to poorer replication. After hearing Akutami’s kind words about his work, Kubo said it was “one of the greatest compliments I have ever received.”

Jujutsu Kaisen broke one of the most important records at the 8th Crunchyroll Anime Awards held in 2024, previously organized by My Hero Academia.
Similar to “The Big Three” (Naruto, One Piece and Bleach), “The Dark Trio” is the term used to describe the three most famous Shonen Jump series today: Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man and Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku. All three games have very different stories and characters but are united by their dark and gritty nature, often extremely violent. For example, recent chapters of Chainsaw Man have done nothing to prevent Denji’s life from being turned upside down. Likewise, Jujutsu Kaisen – already famous for taking down fan-favorite characters – is turning the dial to 11 as it heads towards the endgame.
The Jujutsu Kaisen, Bleach, and Chainsaw Man manga are now available to read on Viz Media.
