Earlier this year, the world lost Akira Toriyama, who in addition to creating the Dragon Ball franchise, also had an illustrious career as a character designer for major video game franchises like Dragon Quest . To honor the artist's legacy, Dragon Ball Super artist Toyotarou has created new artwork showcasing one of Toriyama's older video game heroes.
On the official Dragon Ball website, the latest entry in Toyotarou's “Drawing Try” series is artwork by Shu, who hails from the Blue Dragon video game franchise. As shown below, Toyotarou's illustration depicts a boy with a cheeky smile next to the game's main icon. Shu's design features many classic Toriyama elements, including a spiky hairstyle that is very reminiscent of Goku. Toyotarou also gave a brief introduction along with his drawing. “Akira Toriyama is responsible for the character designs for this game [Blue Dragon]but as a V Jumper fan, I have to give a word to the manga version drawn by Noriko Otake!” Toyotarou wrote. “It's a really great book, plus Toriyama was involved in designing the characters and what's more, so you can read and enjoy it as if it were a Toriyama manga!”

Plot of the video game and animated series Blue Dragon
The first Blue Dragon RPG, developed by Mistwalker (Lost Odyssey) and Artoon (Blinx: The Time Sweeper), launched exclusively for the Xbox 360 in December 2006. In the game's world, residents The people are constantly threatened by a powerful creature. nicknamed the “Land Shark”. One day, the monster attacks Shu's home village, causing most of the villagers to evacuate. Eventually, Shu and his friends discover that the Land Shark is actually a mechanical tool of Nene, the evil king of the Great Kingdom. On behalf of the fallen victims of Taita village, Shu and his allies embark on a mission to confront Nene and put an end to his machine army. To do that, Shu's group takes control of creatures known as “shadows” that are given life after being separated from Nene's tainted soul. Studio Pierrot (Naruto, Bleach) later adapted the game's story into an anime series, which aired from April 2007 to March 2009.
Following Toriyama's death, Toyotarou has paid tribute to some of the late manga artist's lesser-known works. On April 4, the official Dragon Ball website highlighted a series of drawings by Toyotarou featuring characters from Dr. Slump, Savings Soldier Cashman and Dub & Peter 1 – Toriyama's first three manga series. Dr. Slump, released four years before Dragon Ball, chronicled the adventures of the famous scientist and his eccentric but powerful robot daughter, Arale. Savings Soldier Cashman (1990-1991) tells the heroic exploits of “Cashman,” who begins his career as a superhero to collect money for repairs to his damaged ship. Dub & Peter 1 (1992-1993) revolves around local “bad boy” Dub and his artificially enhanced talking car that he uses to impress girls.
