Studio Ghibli fans will soon be able to build a miniature version of the famous Ghibli Museum.
The museum’s official online store recently introduced a 1/250 scale handmade paper model kit that recreates the colorful exterior of the Ghibli Museum’s main building, designed by co-founder Legend Studio Ghibli Hayao Miyazaki. The product set recreates famous locations and surrounding areas meticulously down to every detail. Below is an image of the finished version including miniature trees, bushes, paved walkways, small flags and a wood-paneled storefront. Including tax, the retail price is 20,000 yen (about 133.24 USD at the time of writing). The Ghibli Museum has made the set available for pre-order and will begin shipping to customers in mid-April.

The Ghibli Museum playfully incorporates the studio’s beloved cast of characters into its decor. In recognition of this, the studio is also selling companion model kits for some of the museum’s most popular attractions. A highlight of these is the Totoro Fake Reception Area, where a model illustrated with the character “welcomes” visitors as they enter the museum grounds. Another is the Cat Bathroom – the restroom entrance area includes a model of My Neighbor’s Bus Totoro, Totoro’s equally famous companion. Finally, the Rooftop Robot Soldier recreates the famous Laputian robot statue displayed at the official venue. Each model alone costs 2,860 yen (about 19.06 USD).
The Ghibli Museum is a must-see for Miyazaki and Anime fans
Located in Mitaka, Japan, the Ghibli Museum was established to commemorate the studio’s immense contributions to the animation medium. According to Hayao Miyazaki’s statement, his goal was not only to create “a series of works of art from past Ghibli films” but also a place where visitors could “understand the artist’s spirit and gain new insights about animation”. Accordingly, several exhibitions aim to creatively engage visitors while educating them about various aspects of animation production. Additionally, the Ghibli Museum regularly displays location-specific short animated films. The most famous of these is Mei and the Kittenbus, the sequel to Miyazaki’s beloved family classic, My Neighbor Totoro.
